Al Jazeera’s Tony Cheng, reporting from Bangkok, noted that the incident occurred around 3:40 PM local time (08:40 GMT), when the bus appeared to stall at an intersection with the rail line after the safety barriers had fallen.

As the freight train struck the halted bus and continued onward, it dragged several nearby vehicles along with it before the bus ignited.
