Sophia Space Establishes $300 Million Funding Agreement with SLI for 10-Satellite Orbital Computing Network

Sophia Space has defined a $300 million asset financing framework with aerospace leasing specialist SLI to back a 10-satellite high-performance edge computing constellation. This innovative leasing model, common in aviation and energy sectors, aims to transition to orbital computing.

Under the arrangement, SLI will acquire the satellites from Sophia Space and lease them to end users with fixed monthly or quarterly payments. This method aligns financing with the satellite construction and deployment timeline, anticipating launches as early as 2028. The constellation is expected to deliver computing capacity equivalent to 240 advanced edge servers, enhancing various applications such as Earth observation, weather analytics, supply-chain management, disaster preparedness, and intelligence operations.

This financing model is designed to minimize reliance on equity investment, allowing Sophia to focus on technology development while expanding its space infrastructure. SLI, the aerospace arm of Libra Group, aims to use its substantial asset-financing experience to support the growing orbital computing sector.

Key quotes highlight the significance of this development, with Rob DeMillo, CEO of Sophia Space, noting that this infrastructure is now mature enough to attract capital structures similar to those used in terrestrial industries. Praveen Vetrivel, CEO of SLI, emphasized that this framework lowers barriers to entry and provides Sophia with the necessary capital to build future digital infrastructure.
