A significant movement is emerging to ban AI tools that manipulate images by digitally removing clothing, as various human rights organizations and international bodies call for stricter regulations. This initiative highlights urgent concerns regarding the potential harm to women and children.
The Internet Watch Foundation reports that over 107 organizations and experts have united in a joint declaration titled Global Voices United: No to Nudification. This statement emphasizes that AI-driven “nudification” tools lack any legitimate purpose and are predominantly abused to create non-consensual sexual imagery.
Among the most vulnerable victims are children. According to Reuters, these harmful tools have been used to manipulate images of minors, including those who are survivors of sexual abuse, resulting in the spread of damaging content online.
The groups behind this declaration demand that the companies and developers responsible for these technologies be held legally accountable. They are also advocating for criminal penalties related to the creation and distribution of AI-generated sexual images.
Furthermore, the declaration urges governments to establish and enforce global regulations within the next two years to restrict access to these harmful tools and combat AI-enabled sexual exploitation. Child protection organizations, including various children’s helplines, fully support this initiative, stressing the critical need for immediate actions to protect minors.
