Pentagon Used AI Tool in Maduro Operation, WSJ Reports

Recent reports suggest that the US military may have employed Claude, an artificial intelligence tool developed by Anthropic, during an operation aimed at capturing former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. This information was highlighted in a report by The Wall Street Journal, as noted by UNN.

Details

The publication reveals that “Claude was utilized by the US military in a mission to apprehend former Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, indicating the increasing adoption of AI models within the Pentagon.” The operation, which took place last month, included bombing various targets in Caracas, raising ethical concerns regarding the use of AI in such missions. Anthropic, however, has strict policies prohibiting the use of Claude for violent purposes, weapon development, or surveillance activities.

In response to the reports, an Anthropic spokesperson stated, “We cannot confirm whether Claude, or any other AI model, was involved in any specific operation, whether classified or not. Any application of Claude, be it in the private or public sector, must align with our Usage Policies that outline acceptable deployments. We collaborate closely with our partners to ensure compliance.” Meanwhile, the US Department of Defense has opted not to comment on the matter.

In a related context, Venezuelan lawmakers postponed the passage of an amnesty bill following disagreements over its implementation process. There have been numerous calls from opposition supporters demanding the release of all political prisoners.

This situation underscores the growing intersection of artificial intelligence and military operations, raising important questions about ethical standards and the implications of deploying such technologies in conflict scenarios. As global conversations around AI continue to evolve, their impact on governance and human rights remains a key concern.
