The 2028 Summer Olympics may still be a few years away, but Katie Ledecky is already gearing up for the challenge.
As a 14-time Olympic medalist, it’s no surprise that Ledecky maintains a healthy and balanced lifestyle to support her rigorous training schedule, which involves spending around 30 hours a week in the pool.
“Eating well, getting sufficient sleep, and allowing ample time for recovery between workouts are all crucial,” the 28-year-old world champion swimmer explained to The Post. “I adopt a holistic approach to my health and training.”
When grocery shopping, Ledecky adheres to a strict regimen, following valuable advice passed down from her mother.
“I focus on sticking to the perimeter of the grocery store, where I can find fresh produce, whole grains, and nutritious snacks. My priorities are items that are easy to prepare,” she said.
Including essential items and “non-negotiables” like eggs, Ledecky finds that planning ahead makes her grocery trips efficient.
“I’m quick when I shop because I know exactly what I need, allowing me to plan for the week ahead,” she noted.
Whether she returns from a long day of training or travel, Ledecky appreciates the preparation that supports her in any situation.
“If I anticipate arriving late or if options are limited, I make sure to pack snacks or find convenient options nearby,” she shared. “Planning ahead helps me avoid surprises and stay prepared for whatever comes my way.”
Ledecky believes that taking the time to organize a grocery list or workout plan is invaluable, whether you’re preparing for a world swimming championship or navigating a busy day at work.
“Everyone has hectic lives filled with goals to achieve each day,” she added. “By planning and ensuring you nourish yourself throughout the day, you can significantly enhance your productivity.”
Since making her Olympic debut in 2012 at just 15 years old, Ledecky has showcased her swimming prowess, becoming the most decorated American female Olympian in history by the 2024 Paris Games.
“I aim for consistency in both my training and my preparation,” she emphasized. “I treat every competition as if it were the Olympics.”
To achieve peak performance in the pool, she understands the importance of quality nutrition away from it.
Ledecky even ensures she consumes the same meals while traveling internationally.
“You don’t need to be training for gold to eat like a champion,” she stated. “Whether you’re gearing up for the gym, facing a long workday, or just striving for more energy, making better food choices is essential.”
Her commitment to a balanced diet aligns seamlessly with her training regimen for upcoming competitions, including the next summer Olympics in LA.
“I prioritize getting enough protein and nutrients, which I achieve with eggs, paired with carbohydrates and an abundance of fruits and vegetables, while also staying hydrated,” the nine-time Olympic gold medalist explained.
No matter the circumstances or the competition, Ledecky consistently relies on her dedication to nutrition and training to stay prepared, along with one additional practice.
“I have always kept a journal, which allows me to reflect on my training and progress,” she mentioned. “This habit has bolstered my confidence and readiness throughout various training seasons and over the years.”
That unwavering consistency provides reassurance even during the most nerve-wracking moments right before she takes her initial leap into the water.
“When I know I’ve done everything I can to prepare for that moment, it gives me confidence and helps me relax at the starting block,” Ledecky reflected. “While nerves are a natural part of competition, I find excitement in them, reminding myself that I’m as prepared as I can possibly be for that upcoming moment.”
