Zumba Classes Bring Dance-Based Fitness to Yellowknife

Are you looking for a fun and engaging way to stay active this winter? The new Zumba program at the Yellowknife Aquatic Centre is here to help teens and adults get moving and socialize indoors!

This vibrant program, running from February 5 to March 26, pairs easy-to-follow dance steps with energetic music, creating a cardio-focused workout that feels like a lively dance party rather than a traditional gym routine.

Designed for individuals of all fitness levels, Zumba requires no prior dance or exercise experience. Participants learn straightforward dance moves set to a mix of Latin, African, and international rhythms, encouraging consistent movement and physical activity.

Zumba instructor Jennifer Escandon emphasizes that the goal is to make fitness more enjoyable and accessible, especially for those who may feel intimidated by conventional gyms or have difficulty staying motivated. “Zumba is a way to keep active while having fun—it’s more about dancing than working out,” she explains.

The class primarily targets cardiovascular fitness and body movement, avoiding a focus on weights or strength training. Participants are encouraged to set their own pace, with Escandon adjusting the difficulty based on the group’s needs.

The program is available to anyone aged 12 and older, making it a great option for both teens and adults. Escandon aims to create an inclusive environment, especially since there are limited fitness options for preteens and families in the area.

Interest in the program has been robust, with registration capped at 10 participants selling out within just a day of its announcement.

Escandon, who recently attained her Zumba certification, is excited to bring this program to Yellowknife for the first time. Originally from Colombia, she has a background in dance and has previously participated in multicultural dance groups within the community.

While sessions are currently held indoors, Escandon is considering the possibility of expanding the program in the future to include summer classes or water-based Zumba, depending on demand.

For now, her hope is that the Zumba program encourages local residents to stay active during the colder months while enjoying movement within a supportive and social environment.

In conclusion, Zumba offers a unique approach to fitness that prioritizes enjoyment and community. Whether you’re a seasoned dancer or just someone looking to get moving, this program is a perfect chance to boost your physical activity in a fun, relaxed setting. So why not give it a try and experience the joy of dancing your way to better health?
