Is Syria Prepared for US Investment? The Inaugural US-Syria Business Forum Explores Economic Opportunities.

The recent US-Syria Business Forum in Damascus represents a significant step in fostering economic relationships between Syria and American investors amidst evolving political dynamics. Syrian journalist Ayman Abdel Nour emphasized the urgency for the Syrian government to remove barriers for investors, suggesting that those who act swiftly will reap the rewards.

The forum marked a convergence of US-Syria Business Council members, Syrian-American investors, and key Syrian officials, including cabinet ministers and the Central Bank governor. This event follows the US’s easing of certain sanctions against Syria, hinting at a thawing of the country’s isolation.

Jihad Al-Salqini, president of the US-Syria Business Council, highlighted the forum’s purpose as a means to restore trust and communication rather than to initiate immediate investments. He noted interest from American companies in sectors such as energy, technology, and agriculture, but acknowledged that uncertainties remain a barrier to active investment.

Governor Safwat Raslan of the Central Bank outlined strides toward reintegrating Syria into the global banking system as crucial for fostering investor confidence. Yet, he underscored that significant rebuilding efforts, especially in infrastructure, demand extensive foreign investment, with estimates running into hundreds of billions.

While some participants, like Mazhar Makhlalati, called for greater focus on supporting small and medium enterprises, there was consensus on the importance of this forum as a catalyst for reconnecting Syrian-American investors with local opportunities.

Looking ahead, successful economic engagement will hinge on sustained reforms and the ability to convert this newfound momentum into tangible investments.
