Doctors utilize a new AI charting tool
MADISON (WKOW) — Healthcare professionals are beginning to incorporate artificial intelligence into their practices with an innovative tool designed to facilitate note-taking during patient consultations.
This AI-driven application seeks to improve the quality of interactions between physicians and patients, allowing for a more focused and personal experience.
Dr. Matthew Swedlund of Group Health Cooperative is at the forefront, being the first to implement the AI charting tool created by Epic Systems. He remarks, “This is one of the first points in my career where I’ve seen technology introduced that shifts attention away from the computer and more towards the patient.”
Before utilizing the recording tool on his phone, Dr. Swedlund ensures that he obtains permission from his patients.
During a demonstration, Dr. Swedlund listened attentively to the patient’s symptoms and suggested suitable medications. The tool then produced a detailed transcription summarizing their discussion.
“I’m being drawn more into a space of engaging with my patients rather than being focused on the computer,” he noted.
However, the introduction of AI does not come without its reservations.
Dr. Swedlund stated, “Even if a mistake were to occur, the clinician always has the chance to review, correct, and finalize the note before signing it off.”
To ensure privacy, all information is securely stored within Epic’s charting system.
“This is not just floating in the ‘cloud’ for anyone to access,” he clarified.
While AI continues to influence the healthcare industry, practitioners are approaching its implementation with caution.
“We must evaluate each instance of AI, considering both the risks and benefits,” Dr. Swedlund concluded.
In summary, the integration of AI in healthcare is a promising development that seeks to enhance doctor-patient interactions, though it requires careful consideration of its implications.
