Exploring China: A Family Adventure
Travel often revolves around discovery, but sharing beloved places with loved ones brings a distinct joy. Helen Holmes recounts her recent 15-night tour of China with her husband and teenage daughters, highlighting the country’s transformation since their last visit 18 years ago.
High-Speed Railways
One of the most significant improvements is the extensive high-speed rail network that has drastically reduced travel times. However, this development has also attracted large numbers of domestic tourists, leading to over-tourism in certain areas. Helen advises researching local payment apps to simplify transactions.
Trip Overview
To manage the logistics, the family opted for an agency, China Highlights, marking their trip with stays in Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as explorations in Guangxi and Hunan provinces.
Guangxi Province
The family first spent three nights in Guangxi, known for its picturesque rivers and karst mountains, famously depicted in Chinese legends. They enjoyed a stay at the Giggling Tree guesthouse, where evenings were spent dining outdoors, surrounded by the scent of pomelo blossoms. A cycling trip along the scenic Li River and a bamboo raft return offered a peaceful escape from the crowds.
Hunan Province
Next, they ventured to Hunan, staying at the Forest Glass Inn—a converted Tujia minority compound. The nearby Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, boasting stunning peaks that inspired the landscape of the Avatar films, was both breathtaking and crowded. Despite the throngs of tourists, they found tranquility in the charming towns of Fenghuang and Furong Zhen.
This immersive family journey through China not only highlighted the beauty of its landscapes but also offered valuable insights into its evolving culture and the balance between preservation and tourism.
