The automotive sector appealed to Trump to block Chinese car manufacturers from entering the market before his meeting with Xi.

On Friday, major U.S. automakers, suppliers, and dealers urged President Donald Trump not to let Chinese automakers enter the U.S. market ahead of his upcoming meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. A letter, signed by organizations representing companies like General Motors, Toyota, and Ford, requested a policy that keeps out Chinese manufacturers looking to sell or produce vehicles in the U.S.

Trump had previously indicated to Fox News that he had no issues with Chinese automotive companies building cars in the U.S. The letter emphasized that allowing such access would disadvantage established U.S. manufacturers and suggested that Chinese investments would not create new American jobs but would instead shift jobs from established manufacturers to companies controlled by the Chinese government.

Concerns have been raised about Xi Jinping potentially bringing representatives from Chinese automaker BYD to the talks, which some speculate could lead to increased access for Chinese automakers in the U.S. market. Regulations from the Biden administration had effectively banned Chinese automakers from selling passenger cars in the U.S. over data security concerns, and Congress is currently considering stronger measures against Chinese vehicles.

These rules focus on national security aspects related to the communication technologies in vehicles that might compromise sensitive data about American owners.
