“Instead of four to five hours, you’re looking at 40 minutes to 60 minutes,” says Garrett Holt, a golf pro at Horton Smith Golf Course in Springfield.

Understanding Speedgolf Scoring

In speedgolf, players combine their time to complete the round with their golf score. For example, if you finish in 50 minutes and score an 80, your total score would be 130 (50 minutes + 80 strokes).

Unlike traditional golf, there are no carts or lengthy breaks. Participants typically carry just four to five clubs—like a driver, six and nine irons, a sand wedge, and a putter—making it easier to move swiftly on the course.

Fitness Benefits of Speedgolf

Holt began playing speedgolf in 2015, seeking innovative ways to attract new players to the game. “I love it because I have a young family at home and don’t have time for four- or five-hour rounds,” he explains.

Nic Goodin, who previously worked at Horton Smith, was initially skeptical but soon recognized its fitness advantages. “I was looking to get in shape after my wife’s pregnancy, and after just three holes, I was exhausted but had an amazing time,” he shares.

Tim Shryack, a speedgolf participant for over 20 years, appreciates the mental and physical health benefits. “It’s refreshing to be outdoors. Sometimes you sprint, especially on a par three—if you can finish it in a minute, you’ve just saved time!” he remarks.
