Franklin Township Apartment Fire

A New Brunswick man has been arrested for allegedly setting a fire in a Franklin Township apartment building that resulted in the displacement of 15 residents and the death of two pets.
Incident Overview:
Perfecto Quintana, 56, was apprehended in connection with the October 2 fire at a multi-unit residence on Home Street in Somerset. Franklin Township Police responded around 3:45 p.m. after reports of an active blaze, which was extinguished by multiple fire departments.
The fire displaced three families, comprising 11 adults and four juveniles, but no injuries to residents were reported. Unfortunately, a dog and cat inside the residence did not survive despite rescue efforts.
Investigation Details:
Somerset County Prosecutor John P. McDonald revealed that surveillance video showed Quintana arriving at the residence carrying a container. Witnesses later observed him walking away with the same container, now empty, just before the fire began.
While investigators were still on scene, residents reported seeing Quintana driving nearby. He was stopped by officers, showing signs of intoxication, and was subsequently taken into custody.
Charges:
Quintana faces multiple charges, including aggravated arson, residential burglary, criminal mischief, criminal contempt, and two counts of animal cruelty. He is currently held in the Somerset County Jail awaiting a court hearing.
Support for Displaced Residents:
The American Red Cross has stepped in to assist the three families who were displaced, providing temporary shelter and support.
