Curro Jimenez: Escape Naked Capitalism and Propaganda

By Curro Jimenez

In our current media landscape, producing high-quality content is a daunting task, especially within large corporations. As someone who works in a significant media organization, I’ve gained firsthand insight into the challenges and costs associated with content creation. Despite the substantial budgets these companies have, the quality often falls short compared to what we provide at Naked Capitalism. This disparity is one of the reasons why your financial support is essential for our continued efforts to deliver what corporate media often overlooks or misrepresents.

Let’s explore the reasons behind this discrepancy.

It isn’t merely a matter of resources; major media outlets boast impressive financial backing—far greater than that of independent platforms like ours. Similarly, talent is available; these companies can hire top-notch writers and producers. They also possess access to a wealth of information, subscribing to every major news service around the clock.

The crux of the issue lies in the sheer volume of content they produce across diverse topics. This endeavor is incredibly costly, and sustaining it requires significant funding. Almost every media outlet relies on financial support, which typically comes from either large corporate entities or smaller contributors like you. At Naked Capitalism, we continue to lean on our community to fulfill what larger media cannot achieve: providing insightful commentary and analysis free from corporate bias. While we may not always cover a topic first or get every detail right, my commitment—and I believe that of my colleagues, particularly Yves—is to offer you our best, unadulterated truth.

This is exactly what sets us apart from corporate media. I recognize that in my primary job, I produce content with an agenda. I find myself fortunate that my views align somewhat with my employer’s editorial direction, but I am acutely aware that the authentic, open discourse we foster here would be impossible in that environment. This realization is part of what drew me to Naked Capitalism.

As the youngest member of this writing team—both in age and as a contributor—I find it somewhat awkward to ask for your support. So, allow me to share how my journey with this site began.

My story is not particularly glamorous, but it carries significant meaning. I had been a dedicated follower of Naked Capitalism for quite some time. Its reputation as one of the few platforms providing unique perspectives and analyses helped me deepen my understanding of complex issues.

When I saw Yves’s call for writers, I decided to reach out. After some back and forth, we agreed to collaborate. What she didn’t know when I first contacted her was my willingness to write without compensation. However, I understand that unpaid contributions can often lead to unreliability.

Writing—especially of the caliber we strive for—necessitates time, expertise, and diligent research. When Yves mentioned that contributors received payment, I hesitated. Being paid meant committing to a deal; it meant meeting deadlines and delivering quality work. Ultimately, I accepted not because the payment would pay my bills (even though it’s nice for indulging in a few cigars), but because it offered me the chance to express thoughts I couldn’t share at my day job.

Since then, I have approached my work here from two primary perspectives. Firstly, I aim to explore the underlying ideas and theories shaping current events. I firmly believe every action is rooted in thought, often subconscious, and that each thought is part of a larger framework encompassing theories and ideas. Grasping this can provide clarity on our current trajectory.

Secondly, I strive to analyze events from vantage points that diverge from the predominant narratives. This approach is not merely for the sake of dissent; it’s fueled by the knowledge that mainstream viewpoints often serve specific agendas. My eclectic background also influences my interpretations, setting me apart from other independent analyses.

I find this type of work possible only here. If you believe in the value of this approach—because it enriches your understanding of current affairs and the world around you—then I kindly ask you to consider making a financial contribution.

Moreover, interacting with our community has been one of the most rewarding aspects of writing for Naked Capitalism. Initially, as a reader, I didn’t pay much attention to comments, as many platforms lack meaningful discourse. However, once I began publishing, I immersed myself in the discussions—not only regarding my pieces but others too. I quickly realized that many of you could write the main articles just as compellingly, if not better.

Your comments are invaluable; they not only provide feedback but also expand the narrative, highlight overlooked points, and present fresh perspectives. This isn’t just debate—it’s an informed dialogue. For a writer, this engagement is incredibly enriching, sharpening our skills and keeping us grounded. In an online environment often marred by negativity, this community feels like a precious jewel.

Writing for you presents both challenges and joys. It is humbling to seek your support. I assure you, every cigar helps stimulate my thoughts and writing process. I encourage you to visit the Tip Jar and contribute generously to help us continue our mission.
