The Benefits of Women-Only Gyms for Thriving Fitness Experiences

Empowering Women in Fitness: The Rise of Women-Only Gyms

In the world of fitness, creating a supportive environment can make all the difference. Recent data highlights the growing trend of women-only gyms, which provide a comfortable and dedicated space for women to pursue their fitness goals. A study from Total Fitness’ The Women’s Gym shows that these tailored settings not only encourage women to join but also help them stick to their fitness routines and prioritize their health.

The findings stem from an analysis of women at two female-only gym locations in Whitefield and Wilmslow, which opened in 2024. The focus was on understanding why women prefer these environments over traditional mixed-gym setups, and the results are compelling.

According to the research, 80% of women working out in women-only spaces report improved self-care over the past year. This indicates a strong link between comfort in the gym and the commitment to fitness, suggesting that a welcoming environment can foster long-lasting habits.

Interestingly, 35% of respondents left their previous gyms seeking a more private or single-sex environment, which suggests that creating a supportive atmosphere is essential for engagement. With the right setting, women are more empowered to begin their fitness journeys.

Tuesday Wilcox, a member of Total Fitness Wilmslow’s Women’s Gym, encapsulates this shift from hesitation to confidence: “Initially, I just walked on the treadmill to build my confidence. But after touring the Women’s Gym and learning about the equipment, I felt motivated to start using weights. The staff provided immediate assistance when I had questions, which I never found in other gyms.”

This example illustrates the transformative power of women-only gyms—not due to exclusion, but because they create a space where women feel comfortable learning. These environments offer the freedom to start small without fear of judgment and empower women to claim their place in the fitness world.

The demographic draw of women-only gyms is noteworthy, with the largest age group being 25-34, making it particularly appealing for younger women. Perhaps even more telling, nearly half of the members (48%) had never been a part of a gym before joining The Women’s Gym. This indicates that these spaces are not simply catering to the already active but are attracting newcomers to fitness altogether.

According to Total Fitness, the demand for such specialized spaces had been building, leading to the launch of The Women’s Gym based on feedback from over 3,500 women. The objective is to create inclusive environments that meet women’s unique needs and remove barriers that may deter them from starting their fitness journeys.

Kerry Curtis, Chief Commercial Officer of Total Fitness, emphasizes this mission, stating, “Women have expressed how different they feel entering a space designed for them. They want a place to exercise without pressure or judgment. When women are comfortable and supported, they naturally prioritize their health, and that’s exactly what these spaces aim to provide.”

This thoughtful design process takes various factors into account—from equipment selection to calming décor and the absence of mirrors—to help women feel at ease. Additionally, staff are trained to understand the unique experiences of women throughout all stages of life, ensuring they receive adequate support during critical times such as menstruation, pregnancy, postpartum recovery, and menopause.

While women-only gyms are not the only solution for fostering fitness, the data strongly suggests that they are an effective approach for many, particularly for those who may have faced barriers in mixed-gym settings.

Conclusion

The rise of women-only gyms underscores the importance of cultivating inclusive spaces in the fitness industry. By addressing the needs and concerns of women, these environments can lead to improved health outcomes and regular exercise habits. As more women are empowered to pursue their fitness goals in a supportive atmosphere, the benefits extend beyond individual health, inspiring a stronger community and a culture of wellness.
