Florida Pushes for U.S. Space Academy
WASHINGTON, DC – Florida’s congressional delegation is advocating for the establishment of the new United States Space Academy in the state.
Led by Republican Sen. Ashley Moody and Rep. Mike Haridopolos, a letter was sent to the president and the NASA administrator proposing Florida as the future home of the academy. The proposed institution aims to train students for careers in the U.S. Space Force and support NASA as well as the civilian spaceflight industry.
“Florida is America’s launchpad to space, and there is no better home for the new United States Space Academy,” said Moody. “As Senator for the Space State, I’ll continue working to grow our aerospace industry and ensure Florida remains the premier place for training the next generation of explorers.”
Haridopolos noted that Florida has the necessary infrastructure, educational institutions, skilled workforce, and experience to ensure the academy’s success. “There is no better place to train the next generation of American space leaders than the state that has launched generations of Americans to the stars,” he stated.
The letter also received endorsements from Sen. Rick Scott and representatives from both parties, including Scott Franklin, Mario Diaz-Balart, and others. Florida is home to numerous commercial space launch providers, various universities in the Florida Space Research Consortium, and tens of thousands of Space Force and NASA employees. Since 2016, launches from the Space Coast have surged by over 500%.
Moody has also proposed relocating NASA headquarters to Florida’s Space Coast through the CAPE Canaveral Act.
