Champion, Ohio — Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel visited Champion Central Elementary School to launch Round Two of the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge. This initiative, engaging over 1,356 schools and 391,000 students across the state, encourages healthy habits among children in grades 4-8.

During the event, Tressel engaged third- and fourth-grade students in a variety of exercises that highlighted cardio fitness, strength, and flexibility, while their classmates cheered them on.

Students are provided with workbooks to guide them through a 30-day challenge based on five key activity areas: cardio, strength, flexibility, nutrition, and sleep. As they progress, they can achieve different levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—to become recognized as Healthy Habits Champions.

Starting his school visits on Monday, Tressel has already traveled to various locations, including Columbus, Xenia, Gallipolis, and Toledo. He plans to continue visiting schools throughout February, including a stop in Canfield.

The kick-off included an energetic performance by students from the Fitness Club, who displayed synchronized movements with hula hoops, jump ropes, and basketballs, while also showcasing dance moves. This club is led by Champion’s dedicated physical education teacher, Bryant Wilson.

“You all are not just participating in the Fitness Challenge; you’re taking it to the next level,” Tressel encouraged the students.

With the students participating in activities like jumping jacks and dance moves, Tressel emphasized the importance of a balanced healthy lifestyle. “Proper nutrition and sufficient sleep are essential,” he remarked.

Setting personal goals rather than competing with others was a crucial point Tressel shared. He urged the youngsters: “It’s not a race; it’s about you setting your own goals.”

Champion Elementary School Principal Alexandra Nannicola, along with local educators and community leaders, joined in balance and flexibility exercises. This collaborative engagement allowed students to appreciate their mentors with applause and gestures of thanks.

Additionally, Brendon Kilpatrick, an accomplished athlete who now holds a Master’s degree in nursing, shared insights on nutrition and the significance of rest. He stressed the importance of incorporating protein-rich foods and plenty of fruits and vegetables into their diets, while also aiming for 8-10 hours of sleep each night.

Tressel, who also served as president of Youngstown State University, has been Ohio’s lieutenant governor since February 2025. Under Governor Mike DeWine’s direction, Tressel aims to promote health and well-being for all Ohioans, believing that good health is a stepping stone to fulfilling personal potential.

“The healthier you are, the better your chances are of reaching your fullest potential,” Tressel stated.

### Conclusion

The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge is an inspiring initiative encouraging students to embrace healthy habits crucial for their development. As Lt. Gov. Tressel illustrates, individual goals, nutrition, and ample rest play vital roles in a child’s journey toward wellness. By participating in such programs, students not only enhance their fitness but also learn valuable life lessons on setting goals and maintaining a balanced lifestyle. Let us all commit to promoting fitness in our communities and supporting our children in their quest for health and well-being.
