Transforming Lives Through Fitness: The Power of Exercise in Unlikely Places
Getting motivated to work out can be a challenge for many, especially when faced with the comfort of home. Yet, for some women at Perryville Prison in Goodyear, Arizona, the story unfolds quite differently.
Every Wednesday, women in the San Carlos unit come together, both indoors and in the yard, for an hour of uplifting exercise as part of a program called Convicted Comeback. This initiative not only promotes physical health but also provides a unique opportunity for personal growth and camaraderie.
Helen Dahlstrom, one of the participants, candidly shares, “I have a gambling addiction, and I broke the law in order to support that habit.” For her and her fellow inmates, this hour of exercise offers a vital chance to rebuild their self-esteem, something that may have been lost amidst the challenges they’ve faced.
Margaret Coss, another participant who has experienced repeated interactions with the justice system, expresses the transformation she has witnessed, both in herself and among her peers. “It builds a better community among us women. We can trust each other because we’re working out together and getting to know each other,” she explains.
Changes have also been noticeable to staff members. Corrections officer Melanie Arrington mentions the upbeat atmosphere she observes, saying, “I can tell they’re happier. There’s a lot less conflict, I feel like.” The program fosters a positive environment where women can thrive, making exercise a powerful tool for change.
