As the prevalence of AI-generated deepfakes rises throughout various media, YouTube, the largest video-sharing platform globally, is introducing innovative tools to combat their misuse, particularly in Hollywood. This initiative has been years in development at YouTube.
New Tools for Detecting Deepfakes
YouTube has recognized the growing concern regarding deepfake content that leverages celebrity likenesses through Artificial Intelligence (AI). Numerous alarming incidents have illustrated the potential dangers posed by these manipulations.
In response, YouTube has created a solution that is now being made available to Hollywood figures. Executives have stated to The Hollywood Reporter that the tool will be accessible to individuals at high risk of likeness exploitation, including actors, musicians, athletes, creators, and other media personalities.
“I view this as a foundational layer of responsibility,” remarked Mary Ellen Coe, YouTube’s Chief Business Officer, in an interview with THR. “We have been developing this for some time, considering the implications of AI tools on our platform. We recognize the vast potential for misuse, and we are collaborating closely with talent agencies and third-party management firms to ensure that public figures can proactively address these issues before negative repercussions arise.”
It has been over a year since YouTube began testing this innovative tool. Initially offered to select celebrities, creators, and politicians, it has now been expanded to include all individuals vulnerable to deepfake manipulation.
The functioning of this tool is straightforward. A celebrity or public figure uploads their likeness to the system, which can be done even without a YouTube account. The system then scans various channels for potential deepfake representations and flags any content that could inflict harm on the individual’s image.
