Met Our Fifth Goal: Moving Forward with Karōshi Prevention

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the nearly 1,200 members of the Naked Capitalism community for helping us achieve our initial five fundraising goals. Your generosity has enabled us to secure essential IT support, maintain our engaging comments section, continue our beloved Coffee Break and Sunday movie features, expand our Links section, and provide bonuses for our guest bloggers. All of this has been accomplished at a commendable pace.

However, we still fall short of our target needed to ensure the coverage you rely on in 2026. Thankfully, thanks to your thoughtful responses to our recent appeals—including a new donor challenge announced yesterday—we are making progress. If you haven’t contributed yet, please head over to our Tip Jar and make a meaningful donation! If you’re in a position to give more, your generosity can significantly boost donations from those who are less able to contribute.

Currently, we have raised $2,470 toward our new goal of $24,000 aimed at preventing karōshi, or burnout.

Our sixth goal is to secure extra staffing support so we can sustain our year-round, near-constant coverage.

If Yves, our publisher, and Yves, our employee, were two distinct individuals, Yves the employee would have gone on strike long ago.

You may be familiar with the term karōshi, which translates to “death by overwork.” The Guardian reported on this troubling issue:

Japan is once again facing scrutiny over its work culture after labor inspectors determined that the death of a 31-year-old journalist at NHK, the national broadcaster, was due to overwork.

Miwa Sado logged 159 hours of overtime and took only two days off in the month leading up to her heart failure in July 2013….

Her death has intensified pressure on Japanese authorities to address the alarming rate of work-related fatalities tied to excessive working hours.

Readers have shared positive feedback about the strength of our current team, particularly in how they support Yves during busy periods. Nonetheless, Yves minimizes her time off—including vacations—which is not ideal.

A key factor contributing to the increased demands is our continued improvement in content quality and diversification of topics. Our Links section, once featuring 25 to 30 links, frequently exceeds 65 links today.

Even when she goes offline, Yves manages site operations, addresses overlooked emails, engages in research, and reviews story pitches. The brief respites she can take thanks to your support make a significant difference and are greatly valued.

Prior to the crisis, many of our posts included brief commentary on excerpts from news stories. Nowadays, however, we offer in-depth political economy analysis that rivals think-tank standards, with the aim of clarifying issues and holding individuals accountable. This shift naturally results in requiring more writing time per post.

We are aiming for $24,000 to support coverage during weekends, holidays, and unexpected challenges. We’ve kept this target consistent with the past two years. We encourage you to recognize its importance and contribute generously to keep Yves empowered and enable skilled writers like Nick, Conor, KLG, Haig, Nat, Curro, and others to contribute more consistently.

We deeply appreciate the warm notes we receive from our donors. For instance, Chris L shared:

I’ve been a reader for nearly ten years, and even as I navigate the remnants of the public sector, I am grateful to help.

This site consistently delivers invaluable, no-nonsense information. In an age where clarity has been lost, it’s essential to have a platform grounded in reality. The quality and focus remain unwavering, despite staff changes.

Rick also commented:

I saw Yves’ plea today. This blog *must* continue; it’s crucial. The memory of CKM’s exit from Some Assembly Required is still fresh, reminding us not to let this site diminish.

The new contributors are fantastic, especially Nat Turner and KLG, who excel among a talented group. This additional contribution expresses my gratitude for all the regular contributors.

And Beth W added:

I’m sending a $30 check for the fundraiser. It’s the best I can do at the moment, but you and the writers deserve far more. Naked Capitalism is my sole source of reliable information and sanity! Thank you for all you do!

There are various ways to contribute. The first is through the Tip Jar on our blog, where you can use PayPal or our new payment service, Clover, with debit or credit cards (please note that the charge from PayPal will appear as Aurora Advisors).

You can also send checks (which we prefer due to zero middleman fees!) made out to Aurora Advisors Incorporated at:

Aurora Advisors Incorporated
PO Box 110105
Brooklyn NY 11211-0105

Please email yves@nakedcapitalism.com with the subject line “Check is in the mail” (and include the amount in the message) so we can track your contribution in our overall totals.

Our target for sick days, weekend, and vacation coverage stands at $24,000, and we’re already at $470 toward that goal. Thank you immensely for your generous support!
