Are you eager to dive into the world of fitness but uncertain about where to start? The new CHAARG club at LSU offers an engaging opportunity for students looking to enhance their wellness journey.
CHAARG, which stands for Changing Health Attitudes and Actions to Recreate Girls, is a wellness initiative with more than 100 chapters on college campuses nationwide. The first chapter was established at Ohio State in 2012, and the LSU chapter officially opened just three weeks ago, thanks to the efforts of senior Brynn Davis.
When approached about launching a CHAARG chapter at LSU, Brynn, a political science major with a deep passion for wellness, eagerly accepted the challenge. “I’ve worked on various political science activities, but fitness is a love of mine, and I’m excited to create a community around it,” she shared.
Many people envision fitness as a solitary activity, often limited to gym sessions or individual classes. However, CHAARG aims to reshape that perception by fostering a supportive environment for women of all fitness levels. “We have members who come from athletic backgrounds, as well as those who have never set foot in a gym,” Davis explained.
The club embraces the motto “making fitness fun,” focusing on making exercise an enjoyable experience. Weekly group workouts take place every Wednesday with varied activities to keep members engaged. For instance, this week, the group plans to attend a class at ToneBR.
“You won’t have to face anything alone,” Davis reassured. “When trying something new, it’s always easier with a buddy. There are 40 of us going to class together this week!”
CHAARG also offers smaller groups led by different executive members, allowing for a more personalized approach to wellness. Each exec hosts an additional workout session weekly. “For example, mine is every Monday at 2 p.m. I’ll text the group chat to say, ‘Who wants to join me at the gym?’ so no one has to go by themselves,” Davis noted.
The community extends beyond physical fitness. In busy weeks when stress levels are high, Davis sometimes shifts to a homework hour instead of a workout to support her group. CHAARG also organizes two social events each semester, fostering friendships beyond the fitness aspect.
Davis has greatly valued the connections she’s made through CHAARG and enjoys meeting students from various majors and academic years. “Building relationships and forming the exec team has been a rewarding experience,” she said.
Sophomore Lauren Wright, a management major, recently joined the club and is looking forward to upcoming workouts and social events. “It’s incredibly welcoming. Everyone is positive, encouraging, and eager to make new friends,” Wright expressed.
