Empowering Healthy Habits: The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge
The Team Tressel Fitness Challenge recently launched its second round, engaging over 390,000 students across 1,376 schools in Ohio. Initiated by Ohio’s Lt. Governor Jim Tressel, this initiative encourages young learners to cultivate healthier lifestyles by setting SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound) goals related to fitness, nutrition, and sleep.
“At the core of this challenge lies a straightforward concept: when students foster healthy habits, they build confidence, discipline, and self-belief,” said Lt. Governor Tressel. He added, “By committing to these routines, they strengthen not only their bodies and minds but also learn valuable lessons that will benefit them for a lifetime.”

This challenge forms part of Governor Mike DeWine’s broader effort to enhance the well-being of Ohio residents. In the inaugural round, which wrapped up last December, participation soared to nearly 183,000 students from over 700 schools.
Governor DeWine expressed his satisfaction with the initiative, noting, “The enthusiasm for the Team Tressel Fitness Challenge has been remarkable. It shows that Ohio students are discovering that adopting healthy habits can be enjoyable.” He further stated, “By emphasizing exercise, balanced nutrition, and quality sleep, we are gradually creating a generation that values health and wellness.”
In this new round, five former collegiate and professional athletes have volunteered to serve as Challenge Captains. Their role is to motivate and support students as they strive to develop lasting healthy habits. The participating athletes include:
- Donnie Evege – Former Defensive Back at The Ohio State University
- Roy Hall Jr. – Former NFL Receiver and The Ohio State University Graduate
- Sam Hubbard – Former NFL Defensive End and The Ohio State University Graduate
- Braxton Miller – Former NFL Wide Receiver and The Ohio State University Quarterback
- DeVier Posey – Former NFL Receiver and The Ohio State University Graduate
Lt. Governor Tressel recently unveiled a roster of 62 Challenge Buddies who will collaborate with schools and the Challenge Captains to enhance leadership and foster a positive impact statewide.
Throughout the month-long challenge, students in grades three to eight will create personal fitness goals and reflect on their progress at each stage. This initiative aims to not only improve physical health but also instill crucial life skills such as organization, responsibility, and resilience.
The updated curriculum for round two offers a more streamlined approach, facilitating both personal development for students and easier implementation for educators. This has received praise from Stephen D. Dackin, Director of the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce, who noted, “It is inspiring to witness over 1,300 schools passionately promoting the development of healthy habits in students that will benefit them for a lifetime.”
By the conclusion of the challenge, participants will have developed a sustainable workout and lifestyle regime. For more details, visit TeamTressel.Ohio.gov.
