Marin Initiative Offers Support for Pet Owners in Need – Marin Independent Journal

Marin Humane’s Heartwarming Impact: Supporting Pets and Their Families

At Marin Humane, we experience countless uplifting moments—animals finding forever homes, reunions between distressed pet owners and their lost companions, and the joyful visits from Girl Scouts touring our campus.

One of our most impactful initiatives, the Pet Safety Net, allows volunteers to regularly deliver crucial pet supplies to families in need across the county. These volunteers load their vehicles with carefully packed bags of pet food and essentials, ensuring that pets of struggling families are well cared for. They also stock local food pantries with pet food to further support the community.

The Pet Safety Net program not only provides free supplies but also financial assistance for veterinary care, low-cost behavior consultations, and help with pet deposits for rental properties. Additionally, we run free community clinics throughout the year, partnering with community groups and volunteer veterinarians to offer health exams, vaccinations, and microchips, serving areas from Sausalito to Novato.

We also conduct pop-up clinics at various locations, including homeless encampments, to reach those who might otherwise lack access to these vital services. Since its start in 2018, the program has seen a staggering 600% growth, highlighting the immense need within our community.

Historically, we measured success by the number of animals adopted, but now we also focus on how many pets we can keep in loving homes. This shift reflects a broader understanding of the challenges many face, often leading them to surrender their pets when facing financial difficulties.

Recognizing this trend, many animal welfare organizations nationwide are implementing similar initiatives, but they depend on community support for funding.

This year, our Pet Safety Net will be the spotlight of our gala, “Tails by Twilight,” on Saturday at 5 p.m. at our Novato campus. Join fellow animal lovers for an evening committed to raising essential funds for these programs. For tickets ($275 to $375), visit marinhumane.org/gala.

We are fortunate to work in a community that values the human-animal bond so deeply. The generosity of our residents inspires us every day.
