The Rivian R2’s Innovative Pet Camera Allows Owners to Monitor Their Pets Remotely

Rivian Introduces Pet Cam Feature for R2 EVs

Rivian is set to launch a new feature called Pet Cam for its R2 electric vehicle model. This innovation utilizes a hidden RGB camera mounted in the rearview mirror to provide a livestream of the vehicle’s interior directly to the owner’s smartphone. This feature is part of Rivian’s efforts to enhance pet safety and comfort while driving.

Key Features of Pet Cam:

  • Live Monitoring: Owners can keep an eye on their furry friends via Rivian’s smartphone app, ensuring their pet’s well-being during trips.
  • Comfort Mode: The accompanying Pet Comfort Mode maintains a pleasant cabin temperature when pets are inside the vehicle.
  • Snapshot Options: Owners can opt to receive image snapshots every minute on their smartphone’s lock screen.

Availability and Limitations:

  • Model Exclusivity: Pet Cam will only be available on the R2 model, as the existing R1S and R1T models do not feature a suitable RGB camera for color streaming.
  • Privacy Measures: The feature is designed with privacy in mind; it will remain inactive if the camera detects a human in the vehicle. Rivian’s software chief emphasized the importance of protecting users from potential misuse, particularly in sensitive situations.

This feature will be available through an upcoming over-the-air software update, though specific timing for the rollout has yet to be announced.
