Kaumudi Nookala, a 37-year-old software engineer from Hyderabad, embodies this trend. After a hiatus from structured exercise due to the pandemic and motherhood, she sought a vacation that would rejuvenate her body and mind. In November, she participated in a three-day Primal Movement Edition organized by The Burn Company in Kerala. This retreat introduced her and a small group of participants to various forms of movement, including mudgar (a traditional exercise with a wooden club) and animal flow, which emphasizes natural body movement.

Nookala observed that her group comprised individuals at different fitness levels. “Being around others who are also working towards their goals is incredibly motivating,” she noted.

The Evolution of Fitness Retreats

The Burn Company, founded by Febin Zachariah and Dixon Alex Mathew, aims to create a welcoming environment for fitness enthusiasts. They have organized nine different vacations centered around martial arts, primal movements, and yoga-infused recovery. Most programs span three days and accommodate 15 to 16 participants, with the majority being beginners.

Zachariah emphasizes the importance of outdoor sessions, stating, “The environment is tailored to enhance the experience.” Participants have come from diverse regions not only within India but also from countries like Austria and Ireland.

The Motivations Behind Fitness Travel

People participate in fitness vacations for various reasons. Some aim to boost their mental health and energy levels, while others seek to establish sustainable habits or explore new forms of exercise. Michael Oszmann, director of Health Travel, highlights that most attendees hope to return feeling healthier and more motivated.

These vacations may last anywhere from three days to several months, accommodating different fitness needs and goals. Zachariah acknowledges the challenges of running such niche businesses but remains committed to delivering quality experiences.

Time-Efficiency and Flexibility

Archita Mishra, a fitness trainer and nutritionist from Mumbai, points out that these camps help eliminate a major barrier many face in maintaining an exercise routine: time. “Decision fatigue is removed at these camps,” she explains. Participants can enjoy Wi-Fi, flexible schedules, and varied activities without the stress of constant decision-making about when and how to work out.

Fitness camps are designed for all levels, allowing participants to try diverse workouts, from mixed martial arts to CrossFit, all in one place.

A Global Phenomenon

International locations like Phuket, particularly the Soi Ta-iad area, have become popular spots for fitness enthusiasts. This region boasts numerous Muay Thai camps and CrossFit gyms. Mishra, who attended a boot camp in Phuket, notes that while the area has historically attracted more experienced trainers, an increasing number of beginners are now joining.

The Growth of Wellness Tourism

The wellness tourism market is expanding rapidly. While budget-friendly fitness vacations can cost between Rs 25,000-50,000 for a week, luxury retreats can reach Rs 4-8 lakh. This shift towards prioritizing fitness reflects broader societal changes, where having a toned physique is increasingly viewed as a status symbol.

According to the Global Wellness Institute, the global wellness economy overshadows other major industries, including tourism. Inquiries about fitness retreats have risen significantly, particularly among travelers aged 35 to 45. Oszmann notes that hotels are increasingly offering wellness programming, often led by famous athletes, and focusing on specific goals like weight loss and improved fitness.

Emerging destinations, like Zamaya Fitness Resort in Tulum, Mexico, highlight the trend toward holistic wellness offerings that include functional training and nutrition guidance.
