Individual charged with deliberately striking two Bridgewater State University students with vehicle – Boston News, Weather, Sports

A Weymouth man, Steven Mayle, was arraigned on Monday for allegedly intentionally hitting two Bridgewater State University students with his car during a homecoming event. He faces charges including attempted murder, reckless operation of a motor vehicle, leaving the scene of personal injury, and marked lanes violation.

Bridgewater State University President Frederick Clark Jr. stated that one student sustained serious injuries while the other suffered minor injuries. Mayle was apprehended by campus police and underwent a psychiatric evaluation. Video evidence suggests that he deliberately drove toward the students, although Clark noted there is no evidence suggesting he was targeting them.

Students expressed their concern about safety on campus, with one remarking on the troubling nature of the incident. Mayle appeared distressed during his court appearance, and his defense attorney argued he struggles with mental health issues, claiming the incident was a tragic accident rather than intentional.

Prosecutors revealed that Mayle had been involved in a separate road rage incident earlier in the day. A mental health evaluation indicated that he is unaware of the charges against him. He is currently being held without bail at Bridgewater State Hospital for further evaluation.
