Demis Hassabis, the CEO of Alphabet Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOGL) (NASDAQ:GOOG) subsidiary Google’s DeepMind, is redefining career guidance in the age of artificial intelligence. He suggests that mastering advanced AI tools may now be more beneficial for students than pursuing traditional internships.
AI Era Begins Disrupting Internships And Junior Roles
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, alongside Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Hassabis stated his expectation that artificial intelligence will soon affect junior and entry-level job positions, including internships. As automation takes over routine tasks, this shift challenges the traditional model in which students gain experience through repetitive work within large organizations.
“If I were addressing a group of undergraduates today, my advice would be to become exceptionally skilled with these tools,” Hassabis noted. He described AI systems as “remarkable creative instruments” increasingly accessible to individuals everywhere. He elaborated that developing deep expertise and engaging in hands-on AI projects could potentially be more advantageous than a standard internship, allowing graduates to jumpstart their careers.
Hassabis has consistently emphasized that, within a labor market transformed by AI, what candidates can actually create with technology is now a more significant marker for employers than brief tenures at prestigious firms.

Other leaders in the tech industry are adopting similar views. OpenAI’s Sam Altman has conveyed to students that proficiency with AI tools now surpasses the importance of specific degrees, forecasting that many entry-level positions will be redefined or eliminated.
