Quantum Science Making Its Way into Wyoming College Classrooms

Casper College has secured a $444,059 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) aimed at enhancing quantum science education across Wyoming. This funding will support the “Quantum Pipeline” project, which introduces quantum physics to K-12 students through hands-on experiments, summer programs, and new coursework.

Key components of the initiative include:

  • Quantum Trunks: 130 portable kits filled with experiments will be distributed to schools in all 23 Wyoming counties.
  • Quantum Science Camp: An annual event in Casper that hosts high school students and teachers for lectures and hands-on experiments.
  • New Coursework: A course titled “Quantum Topics and Experiments” at Casper College designed to prepare students for further education and careers in quantum science.

The project collaborates with Texas A&M University’s Institute for Quantum Science and Engineering, enabling further research opportunities for students and educators. The initiative aims to provide early exposure to quantum science, fostering a sustainable STEM workforce in the region.

Dr. Andrew Young, principal investigator for the project, emphasized the importance of making complex concepts tangible for students, highlighting the growing importance of quantum science in the industry. This grant marks a significant achievement for Casper College, being the first successful NSF proposal led by Young as principal investigator.
