Representative Ro Khanna was recently detained by a group of Israeli settlers he described as “hoodlums… with machine guns” during his visit to a Palestinian village in the occupied West Bank.
In an interview with Reuters, Khanna (D-Calif.) recounted how he and his group were surrounded by armed settlers as they traversed the West Bank last Wednesday.
“We were at a village that Israeli settlers had destroyed; they had demolished the school and devastated the area. We were merely observing,” Khanna explained. “Then these armed individuals approached us with machine guns—specifically M4s, which are American-made—and detained us, blocking our path.”
The California lawmaker noted that the settlers called upon the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to assist in dealing with him and his entourage.
“The IDF is aligned with them, not with the Americans,” Khanna stated.
Cameron Kasky, an aide to Khanna, revealed to Reuters that the group was held for over an hour until officials believed to be police intervened and facilitated their release.
The IDF later informed Reuters that both military personnel and police officers were dispatched to disperse the settlers who had blocked a road near the small Palestinian village of Khirbet Zanuta.
Khanna wasn’t alone in facing tensions with Israeli settlers; CNN reported that four settlers assaulted groups of journalists, including personnel from CNN, while they were traveling north of the Palestinian city of Ramallah.
As the journalists were on the road, four settlers scuttled their cars to obstruct the path and began attacking the journalists’ vehicles with wooden clubs and metal rods.
“The settlers then began to leap onto a vehicle carrying another group of journalists and smashed its windshield,” the network stated. “Yet another group of settlers attempted to block an alternate route before chasing the journalists towards the town of Sinjil.”
Israeli police subsequently arrived and apprehended four settlers implicated in the assaults, according to CNN.
“The Israel Police and the IDF take any act of violence or property damage very seriously,” officials commented after the arrests, “especially when it concerns media personnel performing their duties.”
For years, Israeli settlers have perpetrated violent attacks against Palestinians residing in the West Bank, with numerous accounts indicating that IDF soldiers often either remain passive during these incidents or even assist the assailants.
In an interview with CNN, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu characterized allegations of settler violence as exaggerated, claiming that such actions are perpetrated by a mere handful of “juvenile delinquents.”
