Artificial intelligence (AI) has become an integral part of our daily lives, appearing in everything from chatbots to image generation tools. However, it is crucial to recognize the privacy risks associated with these technologies. In light of Data Privacy Week, Information Technology Services is sharing essential tips to help safeguard your data.
-
Adhere to University policy. Do not enter any West Virginia University (WVU) data into generative AI tools without prior approval through the IT Purchase Request process. Be sure to review the WVU AI guidelines for more information.
-
Protect your personal information. Avoid sharing your own or anyone else’s sensitive details with AI tools. This includes never providing sensitive or personally identifiable information like birth dates, addresses, and financial data.
-
Examine the privacy notice. Take the time to understand what data companies collect and how they use it. Be aware that some organizations may retain your chats or images, even if they claim they are anonymous.
-
Be cautious with trends like “glamour shots.” Uploading personal photos or generating enhanced images might contribute to machine learning and deepfake technologies. Additionally, companies may retain these images indefinitely.
-
Stay informed. Keep abreast of AI advancements to make well-informed decisions about the tools you utilize. Consider subscribing to trusted AI newsletters such as therundown.ai, or tune into podcasts like Practical AI for regular updates and insights.
