If you’re on the lookout for the next superfood, consider bamboo—a surprising candidate. While bamboo has traditionally been a vital ingredient in various Asian cuisines, recent research from Anglia Ruskin University suggests that it could be beneficial for everyone. After reviewing existing studies on bamboo, researchers discovered that this fast-growing plant may help regulate blood sugar levels, promote gut health, and boost the body’s anti-inflammatory response. Notably, bamboo is recognized for its unexpectedly high protein content and rich nutritional profile, including vitamins A, B6, E, thiamine, and niacin found within its shoots. Additionally, bamboo provides a healthy dose of fiber, which supports efficient digestion. In their review, the researchers included four global studies that investigated the health benefits of bamboo, from human trials to laboratory analyses of human cells. However, they emphasized the need for “additional high-quality human trials” before making definitive recommendations.
