An Amazon employee leveraged an AI tool to scrutinize internal discussions and compile a list of potential teams set to be impacted by layoffs, as revealed in messages obtained by Business Insider.
Amazon announced layoffs on Wednesday, stating it will reduce 16,000 corporate roles without publicly disclosing the specific areas to be affected. The employee’s list is based on AI-generated data, seemingly derived from internal Slack conversations, hence it may contain errors. So far, Amazon has not responded to requests for verification.
To ensure clarity, Business Insider edited the list. The employee employed an AI tool, named Pippin, to assist in compiling the names. Pippin is becoming a favored tool among Amazon’s workforce for document writing and revision.
“Used Pippin to help me parse conversations from today,” the employee communicated on Slack. “Please keep in mind that this information might not be 100% accurate. Take care, everyone!”
Business Insider independently assessed internal messages pertaining to the Amazon layoffs within teams including the AI cloud service Bedrock, the cloud data warehouse service Redshift, the ProServe consulting team, and others within the company.
Wednesday’s layoffs represent the latest large-scale job cut since October, when Amazon eliminated 14,000 positions. Although the company employs over 1.5 million people worldwide, its corporate workforce comprises only around 350,000 individuals.
