Encouragingly, the required reduction in sodium to achieve these improved numbers was only about one teaspoon of salt—an achievable goal.

The study involved over 200 participants aged 50 to 75, who followed their usual diet, a low-sodium diet (500 milligrams), and a high-sodium diet (2,000 milligrams) over one-week periods. Blood pressure readings were taken after each diet phase.

Results showed that the low-sodium diet led to an average reduction of eight mmHg in systolic blood pressure for over 75% of participants, a significant improvement for those on medication as well. The researchers concluded, “Our data show that the most significant impact on blood pressure compared to a regular diet comes from lowering sodium intake.” They also stressed the importance of healthy eating and ongoing low sodium consumption for individuals on blood pressure medications.

However, the challenge remains that these lifestyle changes need to be sustained to maintain lower blood pressure levels. The study indicated that once participants reverted to their previous eating habits, their blood pressure increased again. Nevertheless, researchers advocate for counseling patients on sodium reduction as a viable short-term strategy to lower blood pressure, alongside medication management.
