Introduction
In recent years, the fitness landscape has evolved, encompassing diverse needs and experiences. One remarkable example is Day One Fitness, a unique gym founded with a mission to empower individuals with neurological conditions. As it celebrates a decade of service, the gym remains a beacon of hope and community, promoting health and wellness through tailored fitness programs.
BEECH ISLAND — When Day One Fitness—Fighting to Win, Inc.—was established over ten years ago, it aimed to provide a safe space for individuals dealing with neurological conditions. It has since evolved into a supportive family environment for its members, affectionately known as “fighters,” and the broader community.
The gym recently celebrated its significant milestone of ten years in operation. It has earned a reputation for offering high-intensity fitness programs specially designed for individuals battling neurological conditions such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s, early dementia, and multiple sclerosis.
“We refer to them as fighters because they face challenges daily in their battle against these conditions,” explains Danielle Williams, the executive director of Day One Fitness.
Founded in 2015 by Steve and Tambra Wilkerson, Day One Fitness provides a variety of programs, including boxing, distributed across four levels to cater to different needs. In 2018, the fitness center moved to its current location, allowing it to expand its reach throughout the CSRA (Central Savannah River Area).
“The inspiration to start this gym stemmed from a powerful story about a woman who overcame early-onset Parkinson’s through high-intensity exercise,” Williams shared.
In addition to celebrating its 10th anniversary, Day One Fitness hosted a gala in November 2025 to support not only its boxers but also gym participants and the greater community. The gym’s attendance has remarkably grown over the years—from just three classes a week with a handful of participants to hosting around 45 attendees in classes at any given time.
Many clients discover Day One Fitness through referrals from physical therapy clinics, the Augusta University Movement and Disorders Clinic, and various healthcare professionals. Williams mentioned that potential participants are encouraged to take a free class before committing to a program.
Looking ahead, the gym aims to implement a strategic plan focused on expanding its services to rural communities, with hopes of launching pilot programs across the region within the next two years.
In addition to its primary fitness offerings, Day One Fitness also provides supplementary programs such as fall-prevention classes, functional fitness, range-of-motion exercises, and dance classes. “Our programs challenge various levels of function, including mobility, endurance, and strength,” said Williams.
Jessica Wilkerson, the program director and fitness coach, shared her journey from volunteering to becoming a staff member three years ago: “It’s fulfilling to know that my work directly impacts someone’s life by motivating them to exercise and offering unwavering support.”
One of the gym’s participants, Monica Coghill, began attending Day One Fitness following her diagnosis with Parkinson’s disease. She noted that traditional gyms weren’t suitable for her, but Day One Fitness provided the supportive environment she needed. “There’s a strong sense of camaraderie here, and we push each other to improve every day,” she said.
“It’s crucial for those of us with Parkinson’s to keep pushing ourselves,” Coghill added.
Conclusion
