Camel milk is packed with essential nutrients like vitamin C, potassium, calcium, and iron, along with being a good source of protein. Additionally, it contains lower cholesterol levels compared to cow’s milk, making it a potentially better choice for individuals who are lactose intolerant.
Some studies suggest that camel milk can lower blood sugar levels and enhance insulin sensitivity. A notable study observed a community in India with no diabetes cases and attributed this to their regular consumption of camel milk, according to WebMD. Interestingly, camel milk’s composition is the closest to that of human breast milk.
Availability of Camel Milk in the United States
Consumers can indeed find camel milk in the U.S., though its premium pricing can be a drawback. For instance, Desert Farms, located in California, offers domestic camel milk for around $20 for 16 ounces. Another provider, Camel Culture, operates a 1,000-acre farm in Missouri with 200 camels, selling three 16-ounce bottles for $49.50, although discounts are available for regular deliveries.
While camel milk currently exists as a specialty product, its potential health benefits may justify the cost for those seeking alternative dairy options.
