Nationwide Recall of 17,000+ Bottles of 3 Trusted Diet Supplements

Iron deficiency is a significant health issue, affecting nearly 30% of Americans, according to various sources, including a 2024 study from the American Medical Association. This deficiency can stem from poor dietary choices, side effects from medications, or other underlying conditions, often presenting few noticeable symptoms. However, in serious cases, inadequate iron can lead to low oxygen levels, resulting in fatigue or shortness of breath, as highlighted by the Mayo Clinic.

Typically, healthcare providers will recommend over-the-counter iron supplements to address low iron levels. However, on Thursday, March 27, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced a nationwide recall of approximately 17,660 bottles of various iron supplements under the brand name NFH. The affected products include:

  • NFH Iron SAP
  • NFH Heme Iron SAP
  • NFH Prenatal SAP

Although Nutritional Fundamentals for Health (NFH), the concerned manufacturer, is located in Canada, their website prominently features a recall notice aimed at U.S. clients.

The recall pertains not to the dietary supplements themselves but rather to packaging that failed to meet child-resistant standards, according to the CPSC. This lapses in safety could potentially expose young children to poisoning risks if they ingest the contents.

A report released in 2023 by the National Poison Data System indicated that dietary supplements, herbals, and homeopathic products were the fifth most frequent cause of pediatric calls to poison centers in the U.S. Notably, bottles of liquid Benadryl were recently recalled for similar reasons.

The Poison Prevention Packaging Act (PPPA), monitored by the CPSC, mandates that certain substances must be packaged to be significantly difficult for children under 5 years old to open within a reasonable timeframe while still being accessible for adults.

These supplements were sold between March 2022 and December 2024 at numerous naturopathic and homeopathic clinics, including “A Woman’s Time,” Doctor Supplement stores, as well as online through WholescriptsInc.com and Natural Partners (Fullscript.com). Prices for the bottles ranged from $20 to $95.

While the recall strictly pertains to the bottles themselves, the contents remain safe for consumption. Nonetheless, the CPSC strongly advises consumers to “immediately secure the recalled supplement bottles out of sight and reach of children.” NFH is proactively contacting known purchasers and consumers can reach out for information on obtaining a free, child-resistant replacement bottle. Contact details for NFH can be found through the CPSC link.
