Introducing Arts Landing: Downtown’s Latest Open-Air Community Space at Point Park Globe

New Arts Landing Park in Downtown Pittsburgh

Students returning to Downtown Pittsburgh this semester may have noticed a brand-new four-acre art-filled park called Arts Landing. Situated in the heart of the Cultural District, this urban greenspace was transformed from a former Goodyear auto service building and an adjacent vacant lot.

While the official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place in late April, many Point Park students were likely busy with final exams and missed the opportunity to explore the new space.

According to Mayor Corey O’Connor, “Arts Landing is the perfect example of investing in the vibrancy and future of Downtown.” He emphasized the transformation of the old lot into a beautiful, modern civic space.

Park Amenities

Arts Landing features various amenities, including:

  • Pickleball courts
  • A playground with artist-inspired play equipment
  • Tables with seating and overhead lighting
  • Public restrooms
  • A water refill station
  • A large stage for concerts and performances

Art enthusiasts can stroll through the park and see large sculptural installations created by local artists like Thaddeus Mosley, vanessa german, and Darian Johnson, among others.

According to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, the civic space is designed to welcome residents and visitors, host festivals and performances, showcase public art, and provide opportunities for recreation and relaxation.

Upcoming Events

Later this week, the Cultural Trust is hosting “A Landing Ovation,” a free season preview performance featuring the Pittsburgh Opera, Pittsburgh Ballet Theater, and the merged Pittsburgh CLO and Pittsburgh Public Theater, accompanied by live music from the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra. This event will take place on September 24 at 6 p.m.

If an outdoor movie night is more appealing, a free screening of the 1989 film “Batman” is scheduled for September 27 at 7:30 p.m. on the landing’s Great Lawn.

Open to the public year-round from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Arts Landing promises to be a vibrant spot for students throughout the school year, offering art, performances, and outdoor recreation just steps from Point Park’s campus.
