72-Year-Old Scottish Supergran Sets Hyrox World Record: Her Weekly Workout Routine Revealed

Unleash Your Inner Athlete at Any Age
Age should never be a barrier when it comes to fitness. Caroline Munro, a remarkable 72-year-old, has proven that with her world-record-breaking performance in the 70-74 age group at the Hyrox EMEA Championships. Despite undergoing three hip replacements, Caroline has demonstrated that determination and the right training can set new benchmarks—literally!

Accompanied by her training partner Jim Malinka, Caroline excelled at London Olympia, qualifying for the Hyrox World Championships in Stockholm. She joyously declared, “We actually broke the world record by eight minutes!” to Women’s Health.

A triathlete and former army driver from Aberdeenshire, Caroline has always been active. “I’m reasonably fit; I have a black belt in karate,” she shared, illustrating her diverse fitness prowess.

Caroline began training specifically for Hyrox after her son, a fitness instructor, encouraged her. “My eldest son Stuart asked if I would do a competition with him, and I said yes,” she recalled. Not fully aware of what Hyrox involved, she researched it and quickly realized she would need to elevate her game.

Since then, she has participated in six Hyrox events, securing a podium position multiple times, including a third-place finish at the World Championships in Chicago last year.

A Sneak Peek into Caroline’s Training Schedule

Currently, Caroline follows a 12-week training plan for the Stockholm Championships, designed by her son. She switches between gyms located in Banff and Turriff, incorporating a well-rounded weekly routine:

Monday: Weights and running
Tuesday: Swimming and stretching
Wednesday: Rest
Thursday: Cycling and swimming
Friday: Gym weights and cardio
Saturday: parkrun
Sunday: Swimming in the North Sea

Her recovery methods are just as active; Caroline loves to unwind by riding her Honda Rebel motorcycle. “Weight training followed by a dip in the ice bath and some cycling is my jam!” she noted on Instagram at the 11-week countdown to the championships.

Despite her previous surgeries, Caroline has adapted her routine rather than sidelining it. “I’ve had to increase my stretching since my third hip replacement, as I’m still limited in some movements, but I refuse to let that stop me!” She humorously compares her recovery to childbirth: “It’s terrible at the time, but you soon forget until it happens again!”

Core Exercises in Caroline’s Fitness Regimen

Caroline’s routine heavily emphasizes a mix of upper and lower-body strength exercises. She focuses on exercises like bench presses with 20 kg, bent-over rows, and lunges with 20 kg, along with regular runs with the Turriff Running Club and wall ball exercises.

In one memorable January session, she completed: various strength and cardio elements designed to enhance endurance and overall fitness.

Her dedicated approach has even inspired her younger family members to embrace fitness. “The whole family has started training to keep up with their crazy granny!” she exclaimed, emphasizing the infectious nature of her passion for health.

Caroline will soon race alongside her children and grandchildren at the Hyrox relay in London this December, showcasing a multi-generational commitment to fitness. “Next year, my youngest son Martin suggested we do a mixed doubles in Glasgow,” she noted excitedly.
