Considering Fastpacking? Check Out the Ladies Loop in Washington!

Fastpacking in the Chiwaukum Mountains: A 24-Hour Adventure

On October 5, 2026, David Gleisner, the Community Engagement Editor at Trail Runner, embarked on an exhilarating fastpacking trip in the Chiwaukum Mountains of Washington. Accompanied by a group led by trail runner and climber Jenny Abegg, they set off with the goal of reaching Lake Edna, enjoying fall foliage, and returning via a 20-something mile loop.

Setting Off

The group of ten left from the Icicle Creek Trailhead, aiming to travel light with all essentials in their packs. The previous day had been cloudy, but morning sunlight brought warmth and motivation as they set out through lush undergrowth, crossing brisk streams and sharing stories along the way.

Encountering Challenges

As they ascended, the trek became more strenuous. The trail led them through vibrant red maples, and despite initial enthusiasm, the group resorted to power hiking. Upon reaching the alpine terrain, they donned extra layers against the incoming chill. Their hard work was rewarded with breathtaking views of the cloud-covered peaks.

Climbing to Cape Horn

Reaching Lake Edna by mid-afternoon, they were joined by others who had taken a shorter route. Soon after, Jenny proposed a hike to the summit of Cape Horn. David, though not a seasoned climber, accepted the challenge alongside Jenny and a fellow Patagonia employee, Jess.

Once they reached the summit, they enjoyed panoramic views and the camaraderie of the other hikers below. As the day turned to evening, they prepared warm meals, sharing a “cuddle puddle” for warmth during the chilly night.

A Frosty Night

The following morning, the group awoke to varying degrees of restfulness due to their sleeping arrangements. Once breakfast was completed, they planned to conquer the ridgeline of Cape Horn again now that the weather had cleared. With renewed energy, seven adventurers, including David, began their ascent.

Valued Lessons and Gear Assessment

The descent proved challenging, but after a steady pull through beautiful trails back to the trailhead, David recorded a distance of 22.5 miles with over 7,000 feet of elevation gain/loss. The lightweight gear held up exceptionally well, proving both functional and comfortable.

The organizers had promised an unforgettable experience, and David concluded that the journey had indeed delivered on that promise, enriched by the stunning surroundings and new friendships forged along the way.
