Selfridges Launches Cosmetics and Fragrance Recycling Program with Recycler Partnership

Embrace Sustainability: The Reselfridges Recycle Scheme

As health and wellness enthusiasts, many of us are committed to not only caring for our bodies but also for the environment. A recent initiative by MyGroup and the UK retailer Selfridges exemplifies how fitness and sustainability can go hand in hand. They have introduced an innovative recycling program aimed at beauty and cosmetics in major cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham, making it easier than ever for consumers to reduce waste while enjoying exclusive rewards.

The Reselfridges Recycle Scheme

Under the Reselfridges Recycle scheme, consumers are encouraged to return their empty containers for perfume, aftershaves, and cosmetics to designated Selfridges locations. For every five empty packaging items returned, participants earn what’s known as an “Unlocked Key.” This Key grants them access to various retailer perks, including unique rewards and memorable experiences.

MyGroup oversees the entire process, from collection to processing, at its state-of-the-art facility in Hull, UK. They effectively recover packaging materials and any residual products, feeding them back into supply chains through their innovative ReFactory operation.

This scheme is built upon a promising trial that took place at the Selfridges Trafford Centre in 2025, where the number of Unlocked Keys collected saw a remarkable increase of 271% within just three months.

Importance of Recycling Hard-to-Process Items

Steve Carrie, Group Director at MyGroup, acknowledges the significant barriers that come with recycling beauty products. Many fragrance bottles are not included in regular curbside recycling programs due to the complexities surrounding their materials and any leftover contents. Carrie states, “These products are widely used but usually discarded after a single use. With Reselfridges, we’re offering a practical take-back solution that allows us to collect even the most challenging items on a large scale, ensuring safe recovery.”

In collaboration with the British Beauty Council, MyGroup is pivoting towards recycling cosmetic packaging that typically wouldn’t be collected through standard local services.

Successful Initiatives in Beauty Recycling

The need for effective recycling initiatives is echoed by other retailers, too. For instance, Sephora’s Beauty Re(Purposed) program successfully gathered over 100,000 pounds (approximately 45,000 kg) of empty beauty packaging in their efforts. Furthermore, German retailers Kaufland and VollCorner Biomarkt have teamed up with the digital platform Reo to trial a deposit return system, making strides in sustainable personal care packaging.

Conclusion

With initiatives like the Reselfridges Recycle scheme gaining momentum, it’s clear that positive change is possible when communities come together for a common cause. By partaking in these programs, not only can you contribute to reducing environmental waste, but you can also enjoy exclusive retailer benefits. Together, let’s embrace sustainability—starting with those beauty products we frequently use and discard. Every small effort counts!
