Make 2017 Your Best Year: 13 Key Insights

How to Make 2017 Your Best Year Yet

And now we welcome the new year, full of things that have never been” ~ Rainer Maria Rilke

Do you believe in New Year’s resolutions? Personally, I embrace change, love to learn, and enjoy personal growth. Surprisingly, I even appreciate getting older! However, I’m not particularly fond of the word “resolutions,” likely due to all my past mishaps with them. Did you know that only about 8% of people successfully achieve their New Year’s resolutions? Let’s make it simpler and call them “goals.”

The arrival of the new year brings a refreshing energy, making it an excellent moment for both small and significant changes in your life.

GET ORGANIZED

While the new year is a perfect time for a fresh start, the end of the year is ideal for getting organized. Clear away clutter and discard everything that no longer serves a purpose—old bills, outdated magazines, and excess paperwork. Don’t forget your vehicle; I just discovered around 15 empty water bottles hiding under my car seats! Tackle your closet by donating clothes you no longer wear. Check your handbags for old receipts and miscellaneous items that have been collecting dust for months. Extend this decluttering to your pantry, kitchen, and digital spaces as well. How much junk email do you currently receive? Unsubscribe from services you no longer utilize, delete unused apps, and clear out old images from your phone. Start decluttering today to set yourself up for success—it will feel incredibly satisfying!

BE PREPARED

Failing to prepare is preparing to fail. While organizing brings relief, don’t wait for “Monday,” “tomorrow,” or “next week.” Start taking action today. If a healthier diet is your goal, get rid of any junk food in your home. If you aspire to live a happier life, stop complaining starting now. Make a list of the things you love instead of focusing on what you lack. Establish a clear plan, stay prepared, maintain a journal, wake up early, and take steps toward achieving your aspirations.

CREATE A VISION

Your goals must be more than mere wishes; they need to be well-defined. Each December, I create a vision board for the upcoming year. As I sort through old magazines, I gather images, quotes, and articles that inspire me, cutting them out and gluing them onto a white board. I hang this board in my office, and every morning, as I enjoy my tea and check emails, I glance at my vision board for inspiration and motivation. This activity can also be a fun bonding experience with your kids. I recently helped a friend create a vision board for her daughter, and we all had a blast!

STAY PERSISTENT

No matter how small or monumental your goals may be, persistence is key. Keep pushing forward and avoid self-doubt. It’s crucial not to frame your ambitions negatively (e.g., “I’ll never achieve this because…”). This mindset not only undermines your confidence but also sends a message to the universe: “I don’t believe in myself.” When faced with obstacles, find alternative solutions and keep forging ahead.

The secret to happiness and peace is letting every situation be what it is, instead of what you think it should be and making the best of it.”

While you may not control all that happens in your life, you do decide how to react. This isn’t always easy; unfair situations can trigger feelings of anger and frustration. In such moments, you have two choices: allow these feelings to consume you or release them and strive to find peace as you move on.

FOLLOW YOUR BLISS

“Follow your bliss and don’t be afraid, and doors will open where you didn’t know they were going to be.”  ~Joseph Campbell

Following your bliss means pursuing what truly fulfills you. It involves listening to your heart, your passions, and your desires. While we may have grand dreams, begin with small, enjoyable activities that manifest those aspirations. Remember, you are destined for an incredible life, even if it sometimes doesn’t feel that way. Cultivate forgiveness, practice daily gratitude, engage in activities that bring you joy, and shift focus away from others’ lives. Avoid complaints, cherish your loved ones, learn from mistakes, dance (even if it’s just you in the kitchen), smile, and spread positivity. Remember to practice self-care and engage in acts of kindness for yourself and others.

Above all, stay focused, but don’t forget to enjoy the journey.
