Maintaining a positive mindset can often feel challenging, especially when faced with daily stressors. Small incidents, like a thoughtless comment from a friend or unexpected setbacks, can disrupt your good vibes and negatively impact your day. Understanding how to manage these challenges is key to transforming a bad day into a better one.
This guide explores effective strategies for de-stressing and embracing positivity again. First and foremost, it’s essential to protect your energy. Once you feel that has been addressed, allow yourself the space to unwind and relax.
HOW TO UNWIND AFTER A BAD DAY
TURN OFF YOUR PHONE
In today’s tech-driven world, our reliance on gadgets is stronger than ever. When faced with a tough day, the urge to constantly check your phone—especially social media—can exacerbate your feelings of negativity. Seeing others living it up while you’re trying to cope can be disheartening. Consider unplugging from your devices for a short period—just an hour or two—to regain your peace.
TAKE A LONG BATH
If time permits, indulge in a long, hot bath. Adding magnesium or Dead Sea salts to your bath can significantly help relieve stress. Magnesium eases muscle tension, which can accumulate during stressful times. Enhance your bath experience by incorporating your favorite bath oils, lighting a calming candle, and enjoying a good read. Just be sure to stay awake!
If your mornings are hectic, consider treating yourself to a relaxing bath before the day begins. Wake up 30 minutes earlier, brew a soothing cup of tea or coffee, and enjoy your bath. Who says baths are just for winding down?
Bring along a bowl of fresh fruit—it feels wonderful to enjoy a healthy snack while pampering yourself. A bath should feel special, especially if it has become a rare indulgence!
BREAK A SWEAT
After a particularly rough day, hitting the gym may be the last thing on your mind. However, physical activity can be one of the best stress relievers. Taking a brisk run or engaging in any outdoor exercise can lift your spirits. Remember, exercise releases endorphins, the brain’s natural mood boosters.
WALK IT OUT
Step outside and breathe in the fresh air. Take a leisurely walk while syncing your breath with calming music. Allow yourself to process all the emotions swirling in your mind, recognizing that this challenging day will likely fade in importance over time.
EXPRESS YOUR FRUSTRATION
Even the most optimistic people can have bad days. Sometimes, no matter how hard you try to stay positive, frustration prevails. It’s okay to express these feelings, whether by talking to someone you trust or writing them down. If you’d rather keep it private, jot down your thoughts and either discard them afterward or burn them—releasing that burden can be liberating.
GET LOST IN A BOOK
What could be more soothing than immersing yourself in a captivating story? Light your favorite candle, wrap yourself in a warm blanket, and enjoy a good book with a comforting cup of tea.
CLEAN
A cluttered space can make it hard to unwind. If possible, open windows to let in fresh air, clean up your surroundings, and tidy your home. The act of cleaning can provide a necessary distraction and can be quite therapeutic when your mind is racing.
TREAT YOURSELF
Treating yourself doesn’t have to break the bank. For me, it’s often a cup of artisanal coffee or some veggie sushi from my favorite spot. It might be something simple like a donut or a new candle. Indulging in small pleasures can greatly improve your mood, especially on stressful days. Recognize that it’s perfectly fine to show yourself some love—it’s essential for your well-being.
TRY BAKING
I may not be a natural baker, but there’s something therapeutic about making banana bread on tough days. The act of mashing bananas and the delightful aromas of spices wafting through the house bring me comfort. Whenever I find myself in a foul mood, the question arises: “Do we have ripe bananas?” It’s no surprise that Mark often jokes, “Oh no, who upset you today?” as the scent fills our home. If you’d like to try this for yourself, check out my recipe for Vegan Banana Bread right here.
MEDITATE
If you haven’t yet explored meditation, you’re missing out on a powerful method for reducing stress. An old Zen saying goes: “You should meditate for 20 minutes a day unless you’re too busy; then you should meditate for an hour.” This practice not only calms the mind but also fosters feelings of happiness. As you practice, you will find it becomes easier to manage stress. For those new to meditation, check out free guided sessions available on Gabby’s blog right here.
In today’s fast-paced world, many seek quick fixes for stress, energy, and mood issues.
However, numerous tools are at your disposal to cultivate relaxation and happiness, including fresh air, meditation, exercise, and a balanced diet. Quick solutions typically fall short. Instead, focus on developing the habits and strategies required to effectively address stress and promote well-being on challenging days.
