In today’s world, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the news of tragic events that seem to unfold daily. We often respond with sympathetic words and thoughtful prayers, but the question remains: is that truly enough? This article explores the importance of taking action beyond thoughts and prayers, emphasizing the impact that even small gestures can have on those in need.
There are moments in life that leave an indelible mark on our souls. I vividly remember the day of the Sandy Hook shooting; I found myself on my knees in my living room, distraught and praying for the young victims. A few months later, when the Boston Marathon Bombing occurred just after my visit to the city, a wave of fear and anger washed over me as I consumed the news coverage.
These experiences illuminate how easily we can become heartsick, grappling with emotions that feel immense and daunting.
“THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS” AREN’T ENOUGH
Even amidst the chaos of current events, we navigate a paradox: we may be living in one of the safest times in human history, yet the rapid transmission of news can create an overwhelming sense of despair. Tragedies seem to occur across the globe and within our own communities, leading us to question “why?” and “how?”
Typically, we offer our “thoughts and prayers,” only to move on swiftly after a few days, perhaps accepting this reality as the norm rather than addressing the underlying issues.
DO YOUR PART
Like many others I’ve encountered recently, I am increasingly disillusioned with the idea that mere thoughts and prayers can enact change. While these gestures are kind, what lasting impact do they really have?
I have adopted a practice when witnessing a police officer doing their duty or an ambulance racing by; I wave my fingers out the window, a simple act I call “sending blessings” or “good vibes.” My family has joined me in this ritual, but I often wonder: is this more about my own comfort than making a difference for others?
Action is essential. Making a difference doesn’t have to be complicated or wait for a tragedy to occur. We can embrace our loved ones a bit tighter and show our gratitude every day.
Consider helping an elderly neighbor, donating to a charitable organization, or distributing food at a local food bank. Activities like volunteering, donating blood, or even signing up to donate bone marrow can change lives.
There are countless small actions we can take to brighten someone’s day or even save a life. For example, nearly one in six people in America faces hunger, with 49 million struggling to put food on the table. We might live next to families with children who go to bed hungry, often unaware of their plight.
Helping may seem overwhelming at times. Not everyone has the luxury of time to dedicate to volunteering. However, with organizations like Feeding America, just one dollar can provide ten meals. It’s a modest sum, yet it creates a substantial difference.
If you’re searching for places to contribute, consider the following:
– Las Vegas Victim Fund
– Feeding America
– UNICEF USA
– Hispanic Federation
A fellow blogger, Mili, is also organizing a Skincare Fundraiser that encourages donations to assist Puerto Rico in exchange for the chance to win some exciting goodies.
FOCUS ON THE GOOD
When I started writing this piece, I wasn’t certain where it would lead. Recent events have left me feeling drained and confused, but they also highlighted the collective responsibility we share to improve the world around us. Witnessing the outpouring of support after disasters in places like Texas, Puerto Rico, Las Vegas, and Mexico reminds me of the resilient spirit of those who willingly step in to help, often at great personal risk.
While negativity permeates our world, we must choose not to let it stifle our lives or our joy. Instead, we should focus on the good—on the everyday heroes who provide aid and hope during difficult times.
Despite the anger and sorrow triggered by current events, there is an abundance of goodness to be found. It’s essential to train our eyes on these acts of kindness, rather than allowing the negative to overshadow them.

Finally, I want to leave you with a straightforward yet crucial reminder:
Be kind.
Throughout my life, I’ve encountered my share of difficult individuals. Yet, I always remind myself that they weren’t born that way—everyone carries their own struggles. Whether it’s the distracted barista who misplaces your order, the irritable clerk at the gas station, or a colleague experiencing personal hardship, extending kindness, such as a simple smile, can truly make a difference.
Every significant change starts with a single act of kindness.
As I wrap up my thoughts, I hope to convey that while I may not share my feelings publicly, that doesn’t equate to ignorance of the pain in our world. I, too, feel the confusion and loss. Yet, we must rise above that sense of helplessness. Thoughts and prayers are not enough; we must contribute positively and empathetically, remembering we are all united. If a single person can cause great darkness, imagine the light and love we can generate together.
Sending all my love to you.
