Incorporating Gratitude into Your Daily Routine – THIRTEEN THOUGHTS

In our fast-paced world, we often find ourselves yearning for more. More possessions, more experiences, and most importantly, we want it all now. However, I’ve come to understand that acquiring more doesn’t necessarily lead to greater happiness. Right now, you have countless blessings in your life that you might overlook on a daily basis.

As I write this, my laptop battery is running low. I’m bundled in leggings, two pairs of thick socks, sweatpants, a long-sleeved shirt, a hoodie, and two blankets. Many of us take these comforts for granted. But after two days without power due to a large March snowstorm, I’ve gained a newfound appreciation for even the simplest things, like running water. Living in a picturesque area surrounded by mountains is beautiful, but it has its downsides— like being snowed in with no heat and nowhere to go other than to patiently await the efforts of workers restoring power and clearing roads.

During this time, Mark and I entertained ourselves with a word chain game. He snuggled with our dog Blu on the couch while I nervously paced around, lighting more candles. Despite the cold and bleakness, we shared laughter and jokes.

As I wandered through our dark home, brainstorming the next word for our game, I felt a deep sense of gratitude. It was 11:30 PM, and though freezing and in the dark, I was filled with contentment. The “old” me would have been frustrated, but there I was, cozily wrapped in layers, feeling truly happy.

It all comes down to one small change: making gratitude a part of my daily life.

PRACTICING GRATITUDE EVERY DAY

How to Practice Gratitude on a Daily Basis

GRATITUDE JOURNAL

One of the first things I do each morning is express gratitude. As soon as my foot hits the floor on my way to the bathroom, I repeat, “thank you, thank you, thank you” with each step. I also cherish writing in my gratitude journal every morning. Good places to start are this book and this journal (which I mentioned in a previous post). Filling your life with gratitude leads to a happier existence.

This simple habit may seem insignificant compared to other daily tasks, but the impact can be profound. It shifts your perspective; as you jot down the people and experiences you’re thankful for, you remember all the joy they bring into your life. You come to realize that true happiness doesn’t require much— most joyful moments are entirely free.

A “THANK YOU” JAR

This is a delightful habit to incorporate into your daily routine. Whenever something enjoyable or uplifting occurs, write it down on a piece of paper and finish it with “thank you!” Then, fold it and place it in your “Thank You” jar.

When you’re feeling down or need an energy boost, revisit the jar and read through your notes. You might remember that compliment you received from a stranger in the supermarket line, the cozy nights spent with your partner watching a movie, or how a kind passerby helped you when your car wouldn’t start.

These instances may seem trivial, but in difficult times, you’ll recognize how important these little moments truly are.

GIVE

As spring cleaning approaches, consider the joy of giving back. Opening your closet and declaring, “I have nothing to wear!” can be daunting, especially when you realize how many unworn items are stashed away. Continually acquiring more “stuff” won’t sustain happiness.

While some articles assert that “Generosity makes you happier!” or “Generosity helps you live longer!,” the focus should be on the act of giving itself. It’s not about boosting your mood; it’s about uplifting someone else. Regardless of your circumstances, someone else is always facing greater challenges. Even small gestures, like a friendly chat, can significantly impact someone’s day and sometimes their life.

How does this relate to gratitude? The more grateful you are, the more eager you become to give. This generosity fosters love and happiness. Practicing daily gratitude enhances your ability to empathize and support others, creating a ripple effect of positivity.

THE END-OF-THE-DAY THANKS

Whether at the dinner table, before a shower, or just before sleep, establish a nightly ritual to express appreciation. Reflect on one thing that happened during the day that you are thankful for.

Setting these reminders creates a habit that encourages a positive mindset. Even after a tough day—whether it involved work-related stress or personal disputes—aim to identify at least one positive moment. This daily practice can uplift your spirits, no matter how challenging the day has been.

Recently, after the power was restored and Mark stepped out of the shower, he looked at me and said: “We are seriously so spoiled. A hot shower and a warm home— we do take all of this for granted, don’t we?

I smiled.

Indeed, it’s true that we often overlook our blessings. This is why practicing gratitude daily is essential. It helps us acknowledge what truly matters— the people in our lives and the experiences that bring us joy.

Countless “mini-tragedies” occur in our daily lives— a coffee order gone wrong, a disagreement with a friend, or a day that goes awry. We often allow these insignificant events to disrupt our peace. Embracing a daily gratitude practice can be transformative.

Ultimately, it will help us realize that the seemingly troublesome issues we face each day often hold little significance in the grand scheme of life.
