As I write this, federal funding for the new fiscal year (FY 2026) has expired, resulting in a partial shutdown of government operations. Across Washington, D.C., and federal offices nationwide, nearly a million individuals are either furloughed or working without guaranteed pay.

It is conceivable that by the time you read this, normal operations will have resumed. However, a return to the bureaucratic status quo—not to mention its incessant drain on taxpayer dollars—is hardly a cause for celebration, especially for those who cherish their freedom.

This week, Republican Senator John Kennedy highlighted wasteful expenditures remaining from the Biden administration as a catalyst for the shutdown, citing projects like $3 million for circumcisions and vasectomies in Zambia, $500,000 for electric buses in Rwanda, and $3.6 million for culinary classes and dance workshops for male sex workers in Haiti.

He also pointed out funding for various initiatives, including $6 million for media organizations serving Palestinians, $833,000 for transgender individuals in Nepal, $300,000 for a pride parade in Lesotho, $882,000 for social media mentorship in Serbia, and $4.2 million for LGBTQI individuals in the Western Balkans and Uganda. A few decades ago, the stock market was regarded as a forward-looking entity. Investors would analyze expectations for future earnings and performance when making decisions that influenced stock prices. Those days seem to be a relic of the past.

Currently, the stock market operates mainly on speculation. Many workers mindlessly funnel money into index funds through their employer-sponsored retirement plans. Others, caught up in the fervor surrounding artificial intelligence, believe we are on the brink of the most significant economic resurgence since the railroad era, scrambling to secure their stake in this illusion.

As a result, share prices and index levels fail to offer substantial insight into the true state of the economy. Warning signs are no longer apparent on Wall Street; to grasp the underlying realities and future trends, one must look beyond conventional indicators. Continue reading

In 1984, the fast-food market was primarily dominated by McDonald’s and Burger King. However, Wendy’s was carving out its niche with an innovative advertising campaign that would not only elevate its sales but also imprint a simple, three-word phrase into American culture:

“Where’s the beef?”

The campaign, crafted by the advertising agency Dancer Fitzgerald Sample, showcased three elderly women as fast-food connoisseurs. The standout was the spirited, bespectacled Clara Peller.

In the now-iconic advertisement, the women are presented with a large, fluffy bun from a fictional rival. They marvel at its size, but Clara, with her unmistakable gravelly voice, looks beneath the lid and exclaims incredulously, “Where’s the beef?”

Clearly, this question was aimed at Wendy’s competitors, implying their burgers were more fluff than substance. In contrast, Wendy’s prided itself on its generously sized, square patties that overflowed from the bun, demonstrating their commitment to quality. Continue reading
