5 Easy Self-Care Tips – THIRTEEN THOUGHTS

5 Simple Self-Care Ideas

Do you remember the little things that brought you joy as a child? Activities that made you smile or filled your heart with excitement?

For me, it was jumping on the bed, reading by an open window on rainy days, and spending countless hours baking with my grandmother. I also cherished the feeling of running barefoot on the grass.

Life felt so uncomplicated back then; our happiness thrived on simple pleasures. Now, many of us find ourselves overwhelmed with stress and constant worries.

What do you think is the biggest hurdle you face when it comes to practicing self-care?

For many, time is a significant barrier. Another challenge is recognizing that you deserve a break. We often misconceive self-care as mere indulgence.

I like to remind myself of the saying: “You can’t pour from an empty cup.”

RECONNECT WITH YOUR PAST

You’re never too old to embrace playful moments. Jump on the bed, dance in the rain, or simply take an afternoon to watch clouds drift by.

Reflect on the activities that once brought you happiness—the ones that you no longer find time for. Incorporate them back into your self-care routine.

YOGA

Stress is a natural part of life that can foster growth, but excessive stress can lead to burnout. If you’re seeking more joy, peace, and self-love, consider yoga.

Stress manifests physically; your muscles tense, your heart rate accelerates, and your breathing quickens. To counter these effects, consider virtual classes from platforms like YogaDownload, allowing you to practice at your own pace.

UNWIND IN THE EVENINGS

For many, late nights present the only opportunity for personal relaxation. If this resonates with you, make your nightly ritual part of your self-care routine.

Avoid bringing electronics into your bedroom. Instead, use this time to mentally decompress: take a warm bath, read a book, or enjoy an audiobook. Personally, I adore my nighttime skincare ritual. I cleanse using a gentle cream or oil cleanser like MUN Akwi, followed by a soothing facial massage and applying serums. This ritual helps me relax and prepare for sleep.

EMOTIONAL CHECK-IN

If sharing your feelings with others feels daunting, consider having an emotional check-in with yourself.

A long time ago, a therapist gifted me my first journal, which has become a valuable tool for emotional growth. If you’re new to journaling, it might feel odd at first, so starting with prompts can help ease you into it.

Expressing your feelings and thoughts in writing can provide clarity, especially when life’s demands become overwhelming.

DELIBERATE TIME FOR YOURSELF

If your schedule feels tight and treats for yourself seem rare, make a point to schedule them—just as you would a dentist appointment. Instead of saying, “I’ll reward myself on Friday,” write it in your calendar. No cancellations allowed.

Also, self-care doesn’t always have to sparkle. Every Friday, for instance, I stop for sushi after grocery shopping. I take a moment to enjoy my meal without distractions, whether sitting inside or outside, which brings me great joy, even in that small window of time.

While I’d love to lounge all day indulging in a long bath or painting my nails, reality often dictates otherwise. That’s perfectly okay. Even a brief self-care moment can recharge your spirit after a busy week.

Ultimately, self-care looks different for everyone, and there isn’t one “right” way to practice it. If self-care isn’t already woven into your routine, it’s time to make it a priority. Carve out even ten minutes for yourself to take a nap, enjoy a bath, prepare a delicious meal, or read. See it not as a luxury, but rather as an essential part of your well-being.
