North Portland Residents Claim Willamette Boulevard Modifications Cause Dangers and Delay Commute

Residents in North Portland are expressing frustration over new speed cushions and concrete bike lane dividers along North Willamette Boulevard. The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is implementing these changes to lower speeding and enhance safety for both motorists and cyclists, as many cars were recorded traveling at 37-38 mph in a 25 mph zone.

Despite PBOT’s intentions, some locals, like Kenneth Fuller, report that the speed cushions do not effectively slow down drivers and pose issues for cyclists, who now have to navigate around curbside trash bins placed in the bike lane. Fuller argues that the changes complicate an already manageable situation, leading to potential hazards for both cyclists and motorists.

Another concerned resident emphasized the need for PBOT to address specific issues, such as the interaction between trash bins and bike lanes, while also ensuring emergency vehicles can navigate the area effectively. PBOT acknowledges that these changes will require adjustments from everyone involved.
