Israel Escalates Attacks on Gaza and Lebanon Amid Global Focus on Venezuela

Recent events have drawn global attention to the Trump administration’s controversial actions regarding Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro while escalating violence in other regions. Israeli airstrikes have targeted both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, continuing a destructive response to the Hamas-led attack that occurred in October 2023.

In the beleaguered region of Gaza, Israel is facing increasing allegations of committing genocide. A recent strike resulted in a tragic incident where a tent housing displaced individuals was hit, tragically killing a 5-year-old girl and her uncle, as well as injuring two other children, according to a report by the Associated Press.Reported officials at Nasser Hospital witnessed family members grieving as the deceased were brought in.

In typical fashion, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) justified the strike by claiming it targeted a Hamas militant allegedly planning an imminent assault on Israeli forces, asserting that the operation adhered to a ceasefire agreement and was carefully executed to minimize civilian casualties.

This tragic strike occurred in the Muwasi region, northwest of Khan Younis, just a day after Israeli forces shot and killed at least three Palestinians in the same city. According to a report by Reuters, those killed included a 15-year-old boy and a fisherman who was shot outside areas still occupied by Israel, along with a third individual killed in regions under Israeli control.

Since the ceasefire agreement with Hamas was established three months ago, Israeli actions have resulted in the deaths of at least 422 Palestinians in Gaza, while injuring 1,189 others. The total death toll in the region has soared to a staggering 71,388, with local health officials estimating another 171,269 people wounded. Experts worldwide caution that the actual figures are likely much higher.

In a wider context, reports by Al Jazeera indicate that journalists observing the situation in the occupied Palestinian territories have noted that the IDF “has spent the past 24 hours expanding the so-called ‘yellow line’ in eastern Gaza.” This action marks the boundary behind which Israeli forces were supposed to retreat as part of the October agreement.

Hani Mahmoud of Al Jazeera reported from Gaza City:

The ongoing Israeli ground attacks and the expansion of the “yellow line” are intended to encroach on more territory in eastern Gaza, effectively reducing the space available for sheltering individuals.

Conditions have become incredibly cramped, with the population in some neighborhoods tripling as residents are unable to return to their homes in areas like Zeitoun, Shujayea, and Tuffah.

Just moments ago, the sounds of drones buzzing and ongoing explosions had decreased, but they dominated the scene throughout the past night and all day yesterday.

Mahmoud added that “there’s nothing on the ground other than the headlines we’ve been seeing in recent days. The expectation now is that within days, the Rafah crossing will be opened to allow movement in and out of Gaza. However, current reports suggest that the Israeli military aims to restrict Rafah to a one-way exit.”

As violence escalates, far-right Israeli officials are increasingly advocating for the ethnic cleansing of Gaza’s Palestinian population and a push to recolonize the area. There has also been a significant uptick in violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the illegally occupied West Bank over the past two years, alongside renewed efforts to expand settlements.

Laila Al-Arian, an American journalist and executive producer for Al Jazeera‘s “Fault Lines,” remarked on social media that, “While all eyes are on Venezuela, Israel is intensifying its bombing campaign in Gaza and escalating its offensive in the West Bank.”

In November 2024, nearly a year before the ceasefire with Hamas, Israel had struck a deal with the Lebanese political and paramilitary group Hezbollah. Since that time, reports indicate that Israel has also repeatedly violated this agreement.

On Monday, Israel launched airstrikes on eastern and southern Lebanon following an IDF spokesperson’s announcement that operations would target suspected Hezbollah sites in Kfar Hatta and Ain el-Tineh, and Hamas locations in Annan and al-Manara.

Al Jazeera reported that “Lebanon’s Health Ministry confirmed a drone strike on a vehicle in the southern village of Braikeh, injuring two people. The IDF stated that the strike targeted two Hezbollah operatives.”
