Weekend Trip Packing Guide: 13 Essential Tips

Packing for a weekend getaway can be unexpectedly challenging, especially for those accustomed to longer trips. I’ve been notorious for over-packing, whether I’m heading out for three days or three weeks. Interestingly, I often find that preparing for a short trip feels harder than organizing a more extended journey.

Perhaps this stems from my love of being fully prepared for any situation, a tendency sharpened by my inclination toward planning and control. However, I’ve noticed that my packing improved significantly after I embraced a mindfulness practice. This new perspective shifted my focus from worrying about excess baggage and shopping for new outfits to really enjoying the experience of travel.

With a mindful approach, I’ve learned that forgetting small items like my toothbrush or favorite lipstick won’t ruin my trip. Two strategies have been crucial in helping me pack light while ensuring I have everything I need: 1) make a packing list and 2) avoid last-minute packing.

WHAT’S THE PLAN?

A helpful first step is to outline your weekend activities. Are you attending formal dinners, visiting museums, or planning a lot of walking? Knowing your itinerary allows you to refine your packing list. Having a list helps visualize everything you’ll need to bring.

Additionally, take out the bags or suitcases you plan to use while deciding what to pack. Comfort is key! I once made the mistake of filling a heavy shoulder bag with all my “essentials” for a flight to Poland. I ended up uncomfortable and in pain before my long journey. Now, I prefer to use a practical Aimee Kestenger Backpack, which I find much easier to manage. I also make sure to pack a light travel blanket, as I often feel cold when traveling.

My go-to for luggage is Away Luggage. I own both The Large for extended trips and The Bigger Carry-On. They have proven lightweight, spacious, and user-friendly, especially when traveling solo. With a lifetime warranty, they are a worthy investment, plus they come in numerous colors—my blush pink ones are easily spotted at baggage claim!

ESSENTIALS

Starting with your basic necessities lays the foundation for establishing what to pack. Listing your essentials helps you ensure you won’t leave anything important behind while also managing your available space. Essentials include electronics and chargers, a camera for capturing memories (I always bring my Instax camera, storing photos in an album until I can frame them), medications, toiletries, documents, and personal items like underwear and socks.

When it comes to skincare and makeup, I opt for travel-sized products of my most-used items, such as cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen, and body wash. To prevent over-packing, consider using small reusable containers like these. It’s best to stick to familiar products during your trips to avoid any unwelcome skin surprises.

Superga “Cotu” Sneakers are my must-haves for weekend trips. They’re not only adorable but also versatile enough to pair with jeans or dresses, offering comfort throughout the season.

BE REALISTIC

Before packing an item, assess whether you genuinely need it for a few days. For instance, I often find myself bringing my laptop, which is essential for longer trips, but on short getaways, I usually manage with my phone for checking emails and managing bills. Additionally, do you really require multiple pairs of shoes for a brief trip?

I prefer a small card/cash holder. My bulky wallet is impractical for excursions, especially when using a small handbag.

THE BASICS

When it comes to clothing, opt for lightweight, easily layered items to accommodate varying weather. A comfortable pair of joggers is essential for travel. The Make + Model Good Vibes Jogger Pants are my go-to for comfort. Consider packing a light windbreaker or a faux leather jacket. If flying, wear heavier items to conserve precious carry-on space.

I tend to over-pack shoes, but one comfortable pair for travel and sightseeing should suffice (I always go with Superga). Black jeans or chinos are ideal wardrobe staples; include a dress, skirt, or a nice top for evening adventures.

In the beauty department, I pack travel-size essentials, cleansing spa water clothes, and emergency products like Patchology’s Travel Treatment Kit to keep my skin happy.

MULTITASKERS, FTW

To minimize clothing, choose items that transition seamlessly from day to night. Focus on versatile pieces that work for multiple outfits. Light layers are easier to mix and match. A quintessential white tee pairs well with jeans or shorts during the day and can be dressed up for evening activities with a blazer. Madewell’s Northside Vintage Tee is a fantastic option, especially when combined with Topshop’s Chuck On Blazer. Neutral colors simplify outfit coordination. To keep things organized, I often snap a mirror selfie of potential outfits as a visual reminder.

While I may not favor one-product solutions, I opt for a few multitasking beauty items to lighten my load. For daytime looks, I find that a tinted moisturizer, mascara, brow pencil, and a lip balm suffice. If I intend to dine out, I bring my favorite foundation and a nude lipstick. Instead of a full eyeshadow palette, I carry Bobbi Brown’s Shimmer Brick in Beige, which doubles as a cheek product and eyeshadow.

To sum it up, creating a comprehensive packing list is fundamental for ensuring I remember all essentials without overloading. I’ve adopted a minimalist approach, emphasizing versatility and ease of packing. Here’s a quick recap of my packing focus:

  • Bags + Luggage– What bags will you take? How much room do you need?
  • Identify your essentials– What electronics are crucial, and what toiletries are non-negotiable?
  • Be realistic– Do you genuinely need four pairs of shoes for a three-day trip?
  • What’s the plan?– Knowing your itinerary informs your outfit choices.
  • Focus on the basics + multitaskers– Lightweight, neutral layers are easiest to manage.
