Conversely, sadness often stems from a focus on unwanted situations or past events. Holding onto these negative thoughts can warp your perception, eventually shaping them into your so-called “reality.” By repeatedly revisiting these thoughts, you unknowingly accept them as truth.

The path to happiness involves mastering your focus and resisting the lure of negative thinking patterns. This notion that “happiness must come from within” is often cited for good reason. While it may sound overused, its validity is undeniable. You must nurture your subconscious mind by being mindful of the information it absorbs. Cultivating this awareness involves developing new habits, demonstrating a willingness to reinforce them consistently, and, most importantly, committing to the journey.

I’ve always considered myself to be grateful, but it wasn’t until I embarked on a daily gratitude practice (inspired by this book) that I truly recognized how often I took things for granted. Despite believing in my gratitude, I still found myself complaining about trivial “first world problems.”

Acknowledge the beautiful aspects of life, from your health and family to the simple joys like running water. When you actively notice and appreciate these elements, your focus shifts from what you lack to what enriches your life. Gratitude has been my anchor during tough times, reminding me that expecting change without appreciation is futile. Cherish the good aspects and reciprocate the kindness you receive.

2. LEARN SOMETHING NEW, AS OFTEN AS POSSIBLE

I take immense joy in acquiring new knowledge. My struggles with anxiety led me to live somewhat confined, avoiding new experiences and challenges. However, it’s important to embrace lifelong learning. Remember, it is never too late to explore new interests.

This could involve anything from learning a new language to cooking, photography, or playing an instrument. Such pursuits can help inspire creativity and pull you out of any rut you may find yourself in.

Decluttering your physical space is equally important as clearing mental clutter. Identify and remove what no longer serves you. This creates space for happiness and allows you to engage in what you love. Make time to enjoy life’s simple pleasures—be it a heartfelt conversation or your morning tea. Tackle clutter in your home, whether it’s your closet, kitchen, or workspace.

Eliminate items you no longer need; many can be repurposed, donated, or recycled. After organizing papers piled on my desk or donating clothes I no longer wear, I always feel a surge of relaxation and positivity. Regularly decluttering can lead to increased happiness and a sense of order in your life.

After a stressful day, exercising may feel like the last thing you want to do—especially when dealing with injuries. Nonetheless, it’s often on these challenging days that a workout can bring immense relief. While I love my job, stress is an inevitable part of it, and physical activity helps release, manage, and improve my mood. Even if intense workouts aren’t for you, consider going for a run or a brisk walk to alleviate stress.
